NEW ULM -- Despite the subzero temperatures, a few postponements and closures, Martin Luther College's annual Winter Carnival festivities continue.

During Winter Carnival, a week-long event going from Jan. 28 to Feb. 2, students embrace "Minne-snowta" with campus activities such as a snow sculpture contest, broomball tournament, Iron Chef cookoff and a talent show.

However, frigid temperatures forced students to postpone the anticipated broomball tournament at the Harman Park ice rinks to Friday.

"It was a little too chilly for the broomball tournament," Student Events Team Coordinator Jacob Ungemach said. "But it looks like Friday will warm up and Saturday will be a balmy 33 degrees."

Due to hazardous weather, Martin Luther College closed its campus at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Campus remained closed all day Wednesday and reopened Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

But the Iron Chef cookoff in the cafeteria on campus Monday proceeded as planned, and freshmen squared off against seniors to create a meal worthy of college palates.

"The other events have gone fine so far," Ungemach said. "But we had to postpone a few and move things around."

Ungemach said he hasn't seen any snow sculptures built for the contest on campus yet, but he's sure students will endure the cold and create something.

"It is a favorite of a few students," he said. "So we'll see what they whip up in the next few days."
