Weather forces 3M plant to close for first time in 27 years

NEW ULM — Concern of the Friday the 13th storm caused the 3M Plant of New Ulm to shut down plant operations at 11 p.m. Friday.

Plant Manager Dennis Miling said it was the right thing to do to ensure the safety of their employees.

New Ulm’s 3M plant has rarely shut down for inclement weather. Miling could not confirm the last time the plant closed due to weather, but believed it was during the Halloween blizzard of 1991 over 27 years ago.

Miling said the plant would be closed from from 11 p.m. Friday until the first regular shift on Sunday, April 15.

The forecast for Saturday predicts a mixture of rain and snow all day. The storm is expected to end on Sunday.
