For allegedly embezzling $535,000
ST. PAUL -- A former Fairfax hardware store bookkeeper was indicted March 6 in federal court for three counts of wire fraud and five counts of filing false tax reports.
Charges against Theresa E. Linsmeier, 58, allege she embezzled about $535,000 from Farm Merchantile, a hardware store in downtown Fairfax. The indictment detailed how she transferred money from store accounts to pay her personal credit cards and used the money to gamble online from 2011 to 2016.
Linsmeier allegedly created false entries in the business ledger to make it appear the money was used for business purposes. She faces five charges of filing false income tax returns by failing to report $266,333 in embezzled money for the tax years 2012 through 2016.
The indictment alleged that Linsmeier underreporting her true income by not including money she took from the business. She was also charged with three counts of wire fraud.
Farm Merchantile sells hardware, farm, home and sporting goods.
