NEW ULM -- Minnesota's First Congressional District race is heating and elected officials are endorsing their favorite candidate. On Thursday New Ulm Mayor Robert Beussman endorsed Vicki Jensen for the Congressional District.
"I had the opportunity to work with Vicki Jensen while trying to secure funding for Hwy 14. She was a champion of the issue and what the issue represents during her time in the Minnesota Senate," Beussman said. "I know she will replicate the results for Southern Minnesota that she got her Senate District and the surrounding communities."
Following the endorsement, Jensen said in a statement: "Fighting for Hwy 14 with Mayor Beussman helped shape the way I approach the policies that affect our lives every day. As our infrastructure becomes increasingly outdated, we need creative solutions. Closing tax loopholes would give us the cash we need to start and finish infrastructure priorities across all of Southern Minnesota."
Jensen announced her campaign to seek the House of Representative seat currently occupied by Congressman Tim Walz in June. In September she made a campaign stop in New Ulm as part of her hometown tour. In addition to supporting the the completion of Hwy 14, Jensen said healthcare was primary concern for the people of her district. Jensen has worked as an insurance agent and has close connection to the problems associated with healthcare. If elected, she would work to find affordable solutions to fix the systemic problems in the individual markets.
Jensen is a business owner, former school board member and former State Senator from Owatonna. She has a background in agriculture and business. Jensen is also the only woman running for the DFL endorsement and is the only candidate to serve in elected office.
The 2018 election is a year away. Jensen is one of six DFLers seeking the Democratic nomination including Johnny Akzam, Dan Feehan, Colin Minehart, Bob Ries, Joe Sullivan and Rich Wright.
