SLEEPY EYE -- The District 84 Board of Education approved hiring Morgan Pioske as instrumental music teacher for the 2017-18 school year Wednesday.
Kindergarten teacher David Wendland was also hired for 2017-18. Both teacher's salaries are $34.688.
The board also approved:
• Hiring Sydney Geiger as head volleyball coach @ $3,907; Allison Woitas resigning as junior high volleyball coach and hired her as assistant volleyball coach @ $2,933; the resignations of instrumental music teacher Eric Elker and k-12 classroom and vocal music teacher Kristina Iwan at the year of the school year.
• Donations of $450 from the Servicemen's Club for school patrol bus costs to the Twins game and a $100 anonymous donation to the fifth-grade science class.
• A 2017-18 contract with the Mankato Area Adult Basic Education Consortium to provide adult services to the district; and Brown county Family Facilitator Services for the 2017-18 school year.
A number of Sleepy Eye FFA members presented information about the recent state convention. The group was third in the state for the National Chapter Award and advances to the nationals. It was also rewarded the the Agricultural Literacy Chalenges, Land of Service, Membership Challenge with more than 100 members and the Triple Crown Award.
Other awards included 15 State FFA Degrees and state titles for the Milk Quality and Poultry Teams. The Best-Informed Greenhand Teams placed third and seventh. All teams advanced to the nationals.
State Proficiency winners were Isabella Portner, Cassidy Hoffmann and Harley Braun, all taking first, advancing to nationals. Josie Lang and Cassidy Hacker finished second; McKenzie Cselovszki placed third, Parker Neid got gold status and Isaac Nelson silver.
