Suggestions for the hearing-impaired

Dear Annie: As a hearing-impaired person, I have some suggestions for other people who have hearing troubles, and I wanted to share them with your readers. The first thing I would suggest -- if they haven’t done so already -- is that they should see an ear, nose and throat physician, as well as a licensed audiologist. If you have Wi-Fi at home, you may be able to get a free landline caption phone through a licensed audiologist. I have one. You read what the other party is saying. The phone would have the same phone number as any other landline phones in your home. The phone itself is ...

Neighbors band together

Today’s Sound Off is a happy idea that benefits residents on a suburban street: Dear Heloise: I live on a cul-de-sac, and as it turns out, everyone on my street is over the age of 56. Many risked dangerous roads to cross the northern border into Egypt. “My family -- my mother, my siblings and my nephews -- are on the road from Sudan to Cairo through Aswan,” prominent Sudanese filmmaker Amjad ...

WASHINGTON — U.S. special operations forces carried out a precarious evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Sudan on Sunday, sweeping in and out of the capital with helicopters on the ground for less than an hour. No shots were fired and no major casualties were reported. With the final embassy employee out of Khartoum, the United States shuttered its diplomatic mission indefinitely. Remaining behind in the East African nation are thousands of private American citizens. U.S. officials said it would be too dangerous to carry out a broader evacuation operation. Battles between two rival ...
