Drama at the gender reveal

Dear Annie: I recently hosted a gender reveal in my home for my daughter and son-in-law’s first child. I invited family and my closest friends to witness this amazing event. My two best friends were there. They drank the entire time they were here. They chose to single out one particular person I invited -- and to treat her very rudely. At the end of the evening, I called these friends out in my kitchen by themselves about the way they treated her. My one friend began to scream and shout and point her finger at me and then proceed to point at the girl and tell her that she doesn’t ...

Float keeps ducks out of the pool

Dear Heloise: We have a swimming pool that backs up all the way to a park. Every year, ducks fly in from the park, get into our pool, and make big messes. But my grandsons have a big floating alligator for pool play. We now leave the alligator in the pool all the time. This has stopped the duck problem. -- Patty L., Bakersfield, California HOUSE SLIPPERS Dear Heloise: When I am home, I always wear slippers. Since then, I and another neighbor have been checking on her several times a day, as she needs a lot of care. We’ve been grocery shopping for her, picking up prescriptions and running errands. We’ve also got a meal train going with other neighbors on the street. The problem is what to do long-term. She needs a high level of care, as she’s disabled and not easily able to get around the house herself. In fact, she just got out ...

Walk your way to a healthier life

Dear Heloise: I agree with those who say, “Walk your way to better health.” I’ve told so many of my patients to get out and walk. Start slow, then pick up the pace as you get used to walking. Make sure that you have the proper shoe design for comfort and support. I have three patients: one who is 93 and walks 1 mile every day, another who is 88 and walks 1.5 miles daily, and a third who is 79 and walks around the block about three to five times every day -- rain or shine. Check with your personal physician to make sure that you’re given the OK to start a walking program. If ...
