Off the Shelf

I have recently received some requests for parenting books, so I thought I would highlight a few recent additions to our collection.

Puddle Jumper Parenting is a new term for me. What is Puddle Jumper Parenting? It is raising kids that are resilient and are willing to take risks. As Brandon Webb says in Puddle Jumpers: Powerful Mental Techniques from a Navy SEAL Performance Coach and Father of Three by Brandon Webb (649.1 Webb), "Your kid doesn't need to be perfect. They just need to be brave enough to jump."

Human Raised: Nurturing Connection, Curiosity & Lifelong Learning in the Age of AI by Dana Suskind (649.1 Suskind) is about nurturing human relationships with your kids in this time of increasing presence of AI in our daily lives.

If you want some ideas to encourage your kids to entertain themselves without a screen, Playful by Design: Your Stress-Free Guide to Raising Confident, Creative Kids Through Independent Play by Myriam Sandler (649.5 Sandler) will help you create spaces and activities in your home to inspire creativity and encourage self-play, using things you already have in your home.

We all spend too much time indoors, especially our kids. Get your kids outdoors with suggestions from Digging Into Nature: Outdoor Adventures for Happier and Healthier Kids by Pooja Sarin Tandon (508 Tandon).

Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About the Lost Art of Raising Happy, Helpful Little Humans by Michaeleen Doucleff (306.874 Douclef) encourages parents to include kids in the tasks of the family from a very young age. Kids have a natural desire to help, so let them, even though it may get messy!

Also, by Michaeleen Doucleff, Dopamine Kids: A Science-Based Plan to Rewire your Child's Brain and Take Back Your Family in the Age of Screens and Ultraprocessed Foods by Michaeleen Doucleff (302.231 Douclef) gives you a five-point plan to encourage healthy habits surrounding screens and food.
