Heine Law, 30 years experience in family law
Linda Heine
Heine Law, PA is a law firm in New Ulm which provides family law services by lawyer, Linda Heine and Legal Assistant Callie Thorson.
Heine graduated from law school in 1991 and began practicing family law in Albert Lea. In 1995 she moved her practice to New Ulm when she took an associate attorney position with the firm now known as The Legal Professionals.
She started Heine Law, PA as a solo practice firm in 2016. Heine moved the business in 2024 to Richardson Place at 108 North Minnesota Street in New Ulm. The new location has been ideal for Heine Law with its downtown location and the space and amenities offered by Richardson Place.
Heine Law’s family law practice includes representation by Heine in various family-related legal matters, including divorce with property, family support and custody issues, resolution of legal issues between couples who were not married, antenuptial agreements, and other related cases.
Heine is also an experienced mediator and qualified neutral under Rule 114 of the General Rules of Practice. As a mediator, Heine’s role is a neutral party working to help parties resolve their cases outside of court.
Heine Law’s caseload is 100 percent family law cases. Heine has practiced primarily in this field throughout her career and transitioned her practice to exclusively family law in 2000.
The biggest change Heine has seen in the practice of law and how business is done in general is in the transition away from in-person communication and meetings. Email communication has replaced much of the work that used to be done by phone and mail. Zoom meetings have replaced most in-person meetings. Court hearings and mediation sessions are almost always conducted by Zoom.
Heine said, “While this feels like it could be a less comfortable or impersonal way of handling important and consequential issues, I have been surprised at how effective remote meetings can be even for people who are facing stressful and sometimes tragic circumstances.”
Other changes Heine has seen in family law since 1991 include a strong desire within the system to help families minimize the conflict created by the legal process. It is important to Heine when she represents clients to strive to avoid contentious behavior which only serves to harm families but doesn’t necessarily contribute to a favorable outcome.
Other changes reflect changes in family roles in society.
“One thing that has changed in family law is that in the past, custody usually went to the moms who were more often not working or working less outside of the home. Now custody of children is most often shared equally between the parents,” She said.
Heine is pleased that she made the decision in 1995 to move to New Ulm. She and her husband have made their home here and raised two daughters in the community.
“I appreciate that I’ve been a part of the New Ulm Community for so many years,” She said. “New Ulm has been good to my family and my business.”
When not in the office, Heine keeps herself busy working on updating their beautiful older home where she lives with her husband, their daughter and their dog, Bear. Heine also enjoys reading, exercising at the New Ulm Recreation Center, and biking.
Heine is involved with the New Ulm League of Women Voters and is a member of a book club.
