Ecuador president invites more unrest by dismissing legislature
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) -- The president of Ecuador dismissed the legislature Wednesday in a move that promised more turmoil around a conservative leader unable to enact his agenda aimed at widening business opportunities and attracting more investment. As the constitution requires, heavily armed soldiers surrounded the National Assembly after the move by President Guillermo Lasso, who has been locked in showdown with legislators' who want to impeach him. Lawmakers have accused Lasso of deliberately allowing a corrupt deal between the state-owned oil transport company and a private tanker company, accusations he denies.
Exceptional rains in drought-struck northern Italy kill 8
CASTEL BOLOGNESE, Italy (AP) -- Exceptional rains Wednesday in a drought-struck region of northern Italy swelled rivers over their banks, killing at least eight people, forcing the evacuation of thousands and prompting officials to warn that Italy needs a national plan to combat climate change-induced flooding. The heavy rains also forced Formula One to cancel this weekend's Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix to not overtax emergency crews that were already stretched thin in responding to the rivers of mud that have torn through the region, wreaking havoc on infrastructure and homes.
Pakistani police surround Khan's home, claim he is hiding suspects in recent riots
ISLAMABAD (AP) -- Police surrounded the home of former Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday, claiming he was sheltering dozens of people allegedly involved in violent protests over his recent detention. The police deployment was likely to anger Khan's many followers and raised concerns about more clashes between them and the security forces. Last week, Khan supporters had attacked public property and military installations after he was dragged out of a courtroom and detained.
Nepal's Sherpa guide regains title for most climbs of Mount Everest after 27th trip
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) -- One of the greatest mountain guides regained his title for the most climbs of Mount Everest after scaling the peak for the 27th time on Wednesday, just three days after a fellow Sherpa climber had equaled his previous record. Kami Rita, 53, reached the 29,032-foot summit guiding a group of climbers on the world's highest mountain, and was safe and in good health, said Mingma Sherpa of the Kathmandu-based Seven Summit Treks.
