China sentences 78-year-old US citizen to life in prison on spying charges
BEIJING (AP) -- China sentenced a 78-year-old United States citizen to life in prison Monday on spying charges, in a case that could exacerbate the deterioration in ties between Beijing and Washington over recent years. Details of the charges against John Shing-Wan Leung, who also holds permanent residency in Hong Kong, have not been publicly released. Leung was detained April 15, 2021, by the local bureau of China's counterintelligence agency in the southeastern city of Suzhou, according to a statement posted by the city's intermediate court on its social media site.
Supporters call for Pakistani chief justice to quit over releasing ex-Premier Khan
ISLAMABAD (AP) -- More than 20,000 supporters of Pakistan's government converged on the country's Supreme Court on Monday, in a rare challenge to the nation's judiciary. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of the chief justice for ordering the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a graft case. The Pakistan Democratic Alliance, a grouping of 13 political parties affiliated with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League, called for the protests. The alliance was behind the joint action to oust Khan in a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022.
Mystery tremors caused by acoustic waves from unknown source, officials say
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- A series of minor tremors recorded on the Danish Baltic island of Bornholm Saturday has puzzled scientists, who now say they were caused by "acoustic pressure waves from an unknown source." At first the tremors were thought to have been caused by earthquakes. Then, seismologists theorized that they originated from controlled explosions in Poland, nearly 90 miles to the south. On Monday, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, an official body that monitors the underground, said the tremors were "not caused by earthquakes, but by pressure waves from an event in the atmosphere."
Croatian army steps in as heavy rains flood homes, roads and schools
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) -- Rescue teams and hundreds of soldiers were deployed Monday to help people in parts of Croatia hit by floods. Heavy rain in recent days caused some rivers to overflow their banks, flooding homes, roads and public buildings in some towns. Classes in the town of Obrovac were canceled after water got into in the schools there.. Parts of the town were left without electricity, and water covered the center of Obrovac. In nearby Gracac, about a dozen people had to move to upper floors or evacuate their homes to avoid surging water
