Vermont governor signs shield bills that explicitly include medicated abortion
(AP) -- Vermont's Republican governor signed abortion and gender affirming shield bills into law Wednesday that are the first in the country to explicitly include protecting access to a medication widely used in abortions even if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration withdraws its approval of the pill, mifepristone. The bills protect providers from discipline for providing legally protected reproductive and gender affirming health care services.
Army sergeant who fatally shot BLM protester in Texas sentenced to 25 years
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A U.S. Army sergeant plans to appeal his 25-year prison sentence for fatally shooting an armed man during a Black Lives Matter protest in Texas, and will cooperate with efforts by the state's Republican governor to issue a pardon, his attorney said Wednesday. Daniel Perry, 36, was convicted of murder in April for killing 28-year-old Garrett Foster during the downtown Austin protest in July 2020. "After three long years we're finally getting justice for Garrett," the victim's mother, Sheila Foster, told the court after sentencing Wednesday.
Florida detective accused of falsifying sex crimes cases
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A detective who has been with a South Florida sheriff's agency for nearly 21 years is accused of falsifying information in multiple cases and of threatening one victim with deportation. Detective Demetrious Campbell, 48, was arrested Tuesday on nine counts of official misconduct and one count of extortion, the Broward Sheriff's Office said in a news release. He was suspended without pay and remained in the Broward County Jail on Wednesday morning.
Missouri lawmakers ban gender-affirming care, trans athletes
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri lawmakers approved bills Wednesday to ban gender-affirming health care for minors, and prevent transgender girls and women from participating on female sports teams, sending their bills to the Republican governor as the state's largest city moved to defy the state. Transgender minors in Missouri no longer would have access to puberty blockers, hormones or gender-affirming surgery under one bill passed by the GOP-led House Wednesday. The ban also affects some adults -- Medicaid health care won't cover any gender-affirming care in the state, and surgery will no longer be available to prisoners and inmates.
