'Rust' movie medic gets $1.15 million partial settlement

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- A New Mexico judge has approved a $1.15 million settlement between a medic who worked on the "Rust" film set and one of several defendants she accused of negligence in the fatal 2021 shooting of a cinematographer by Alec Baldwin during a rehearsal. Court records show the partial settlement between Cherlyn Schaefer and prop master Sarah Zachry was approved during a hearing Monday. Schaefer told the judge there's not a day that goes by when she doesn't think about what happened, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

Utah author of book on grieving death charged with murder

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- After her husband died last year, she wrote a children's book on grief. Now she's charged with his murder. Kouri Richins was arrested on Monday in Utah and is accused in charging documents of poisoning her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl at their home in Kamas, a small mountain town near Park City.

U of Idaho awarding posthumous degrees to stabbing victims

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) -- The University of Idaho will award posthumous degrees and certificates on Saturday to four students who were killed in a nighttime attack at a home near campus last fall. The stabbing deaths of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin at a rental home near campus on Nov. 13, 2022 left the close-knit community of Moscow deeply shaken. Mogen and Goncalves were seniors getting ready to graduate. The four students will be recognized during the university's May 13 graduation ceremonies, along with another student who recently died in a car accident, and nearly 3,000 new graduates.

Man accused of 4 killings in Nebraska pleads not guilty

HARTINGTON, Neb. (AP) -- A man accused of killing four people in a small northeast Nebraska town has pleaded not guilty to 10 charges. Jason Jones, 43, of Laurel, on Monday waived his right to appear in person at a May 22 arraignment and instead asked to enter written pleas of not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony and two counts of first-degree arson, The Sioux City Journal reported. Jones is accused in the shooting deaths of Michele Ebeling, 53; Gene Twiford, 86; his wife, Janet Twiford, 85; and their daughter 55-year-old daughter, Dana Twiford, and setting the victims' homes on fire.
