Sudan doctors: At least 100 killed in Darfur clashes
CAIRO (AP) -- Clashes that erupted last month between armed fighters in a city in Sudan's restive Darfur region killed at least 100 people, according to Sudan's Doctors Syndicate. Hospitals were still out of service in the Darfur city of Genena and an accurate count of the wounded was still hard to make, the doctors' union added in a statement posted on its official Facebook page late Sunday. The fighting in Genena, which broke out a few days after Sudan's two rival generals took up arms against each other in the capital of Khartoum, points to the possibility that the conflict could engulf other parts of the East African country.
Tourist boat capsizes in southern India; at least 22 dead
NEW DELHI (AP) -- A double-decker boat carrying more than 30 passengers capsized Sunday night off a beach in southern India, and more than 22 people including children died, officials said. Police officer Abdul Nazar said the rescue teams were expecting to recover more bodies from inside the boat after pulling it ashore from the muddy waters. He said India's National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Coast Guard personnel were engaged in rescue work and trying find those who were still missing.
Iran hangs 2 in rare blasphemy case as executions surge
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Iran hanged two men Monday convicted of blasphemy, authorities said, carrying out rare death sentences for the crime as executions surge across the Islamic Republic following months of unrest. Iran remains one of the world's top executioners, having put to death at least 203 prisoners since the start of this year alone, according to the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights. But carrying out executions for blasphemy remains rare, as previous cases saw the sentences reduced by authorities. The two men executed, Yousef Mehrad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare, died at Arak Prison in central Iran.
Spain records hottest and driest April on record
MADRID (AP) -- Drought-stricken Spain says last month was the hottest and driest April since records began in 1961. The State Meteorological Agency, known by the Spanish acronym AEMET, said Monday the average daily temperature in April was 14.9 degrees Celsius (58.8 Fahrenheit), that is 3 degrees Celsius above the average. AEMET said average maximum temperatures during the month were up by 4.7 Celsius. Rainfall was a fifth of what would normally be expected in the month, making it the driest April on record in Spain.
