Man dies after being placed in headlock on NYC subway
NEW YORK (AP) -- A man suffering an apparent mental health episode aboard a New York City subway died this week after being placed in a headlock by a fellow rider, according to police officials and video of the encounter. Jordan Neely, 30, was shouting and pacing aboard an F train in Manhattan on Monday afternoon, witnesses and police said, when he was taken to the floor by another passenger. Video of the altercation posted online by a freelance journalist showed the man lying beneath Neely, holding him in a headlock position for several minutes as Neely tried and failed to break free.
Penalty reduced for man who took leaf blower from garage
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio's top court has overturned the burglary conviction of a man who stole a $500 leaf blower from a resident's garage because the man did not use "force, stealth, or deception" to commit the crime. The unanimous decision announced Wednesday by the Ohio Supreme Court also vacated an 8- to 12-year prison sentence given to Donald Bertram. The justices instead ruled he should be convicted of the lesser offense of misdemeanor criminal trespassing, which could bring him less than a year in jail..
`Insufficient support' blamed for courthouse floor collapse
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Construction crews had placed "insufficient support" beneath part of an upper floor that collapsed during renovations on the 124-year-old federal courthouse in Savannah, according to the government agency overseeing the project. Three construction workers were injured April 11 when a section of the courthouse's third floor gave out, causing them to fall to the floor below. The General Services Administration said in a statement Tuesday that the $75 million renovation project remains paused as crews clear debris and stabilize the area where the collapse occurred.
Ex-FBI supervisory agent arrested on Capitol riot charges
(AP) -- A former FBI supervisory agent has been arrested on charges that he joined a mob storming the U.S. Capitol, where he cheered on rioters attacking police officers, federal authorities said. The former agent, Jared Wise, repeatedly shouted, "Kill 'em!" as he watched rioters assaulting officers outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to an FBI agent's affidavit. Wise was arrested Monday in Oregon on misdemeanor charges including entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds, court records show.
Sheriff: Wife of suspected Texas gunman has been arrested
CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) -- The partner of a Texas man suspected of killing five of his neighbors was arrested Wednesday for helping him elude capture, and at least one other person is expected to face similar charges, authorities said. Divimara Lamar Nava had previously denied knowing where suspect Francisco Oropeza was, but authorities believe she hid him in the home where he was arrested late Tuesday, just 20 miles from the town of Cleveland, where Friday's shooting took place, said Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson. Oropeza had a personal connection to the home, which is where Lamar Nava also was arrested, according to Montgomery Chief Deputy Sheriff Tim Kean. He didn't elaborate.
