Russian defense chief wants wartime missile output doubled
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Russia's defense chief on Tuesday urged a state company to double its missile output, as a possible Ukrainian counteroffensive looms and both sides in the 14-month war reportedly experience an ammunition crunch. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, speaking at a meeting with top military brass, said the state-owned Tactical Missiles Corporation had been fulfilling its contracts in a timely manner. But, Shoigu added, "right now it is necessary to double the production of high-precision weapons in the shortest possible time."
300 nabbed in global crackdown on dark web drug marketplace
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) -- Authorities in the U.S. and Europe arrested nearly 300 people, confiscated over $53 million, and seized a dark web marketplace as part of an international crack down on drug trafficking that officials say was the largest operation of its kind. The worldwide operation targeting the "Monopoly Market" is the latest major takedown of sales platforms for drugs and other illicit goods on the so-called dark web, a part of the internet hosted within an encrypted network and accessible only through specialized anonymity-providing tools. The largest number of arrests were made in the U.S., which is in the grips of an overdose crisis.
Kenyan police clash with anti-government protesters
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Police in Kenya clashed with anti-government protesters Tuesday in the capital, Nairobi, during a fresh round of demonstrations called by the opposition leader. Opposition lawmakers marched to the president's office, in the central business district, to present a petition. Police dispersed them with tear gas. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua "told us we know where to find them. We do. We went there and instead met police. Cowards!" Sen. Edwin Sifuna, who represents Nairobi County, said.
Ugandan lawmakers pass new version of tough anti-gay bill
KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) -- Ugandan lawmakers on Tuesday passed a new version of an anti-gay bill to remove a clause that appeared to criminalize identifying as LGBTQ. President Yoweri Museveni returned the bill last month to the national assembly, asking for changes that would differentiate between identifying as LGBTQ and actually engaging in homosexual acts. Homosexuality was already illegal in the East African country under a colonial-era law criminalizing sexual activity "against the order of nature." The punishment for that offense is life imprisonment.
