Erdogan says Turkish forces killed IS chief in Syria
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- The leader of the Islamic State group was killed in an operation by Turkish intelligence teams in northern Syria, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced. Turkey's state media said the IS leader blew himself up to avoid capture. Recep Tayyip Erdogan told TRT Turk television in an interview late Sunday that the IS leader known as Abu Hussein al- Qurayshi died on Saturday, following a lengthy pursuit by the Turkish intelligence agency, MIT.
Paraguay's long-ruling Colorado Party has easy election win
ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay (AP) -- Paraguayans voted overwhelmingly to keep the long-ruling Colorado Party in power for five more years, backing its presidential candidate and giving it majorities in both houses of Congress. Santiago Peña, a 44-year-old economist, had 43% of the votes in a preliminary count from Sunday's election, with nearly all voting places reporting. That was far ahead of the 27% held by his closest challenger, Efraín Alegre of the Pact for a New Paraguay, a broad-based opposition coalition that had united in an effort to bring to an end Colorado's seven-decade stranglehold on power.
New dig likely buries hopes of unearthing Dutch WWII loot
OMMEREN, Netherlands (AP) -- An officially sanctioned hunt for a stash of precious jewelry looted by the Nazis during World War II and purportedly buried in a sleepy Dutch village has -- like many previous searches -- failed to unearth any treasure. Archaeologists and historians called into the village of Ommeren, about 50 miles southeast of Amsterdam, pushed a detection device called a magnetometer along a row of fruit trees and across a field Monday morning and used a mechanical digger to excavate holes in the soggy soil. They were rewarded with little more than a World War II-era bullet, some twisted scrap metal, a crumpled car wheel and muddy boots.
Al Jazeera says long-held correspondent released in Egypt
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- The satellite news network Al Jazeera said Monday that a correspondent for one of its channels held in Egypt since 2019 has been released from pre-trial detention. The Qatar-funded network in Doha said that Hisham Abdel Aziz, a producer with its Al Jazeera Mubasher channel, had been freed. Authorities in Egypt did not acknowledge his release. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
