Montana bans gender-affirming care
HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- Montana has joined more than a dozen states that are banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. Rep. Zooey Zephyr's criticism of the bill led the transgender lawmaker to be silenced on the House floor and then removed after she encouraged protesters on Monday. Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte signed the bill into law on Friday. The ACLU and Lambda Legal have vowed legal challenges to the ban, which is set to take effect on Oct. 1. Supporters say the ban is needed to protect minors from treatments that can permanently alter their developing bodies until they are old enough to understand the ramifications. Opponents argue the treatments are needed to treat gender dysphoria and that the ban is unconstitutional.
Three dead in Philadelphia shooting
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Authorities say three people have been killed and another wounded in a shooting in a Philadelphia residential neighborhood. It wasn't immediately known what spurred the shooting, which was reported around 3:35 p.m. Friday, or how many shooters may have been involved. Responding officers found one victim on the front porch of a house and another just inside the home, while the third victim was on the sidewalk. All three were pronounced dead at the scene, and their names haven't been released. The wounded victim was taken to a hospital and listed in critical condition. Authorities said they are looking for those responsible for the shooting.
Colorado governor signs 4 gun control bills
DENVER (AP) -- Colorado's governor has signed four gun control bills five months after a mass shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub. The new laws enacted Friday include raising the buying age for all firearms from 18 to 21 and installing a three-day waiting period between the purchase and receipt of a gun. A gun rights group immediately sued over those two restrictions. In enacting the bills into law, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis followed the lead of other states struggling to confront a nationwide surge in violent crime and mass shootings. He was flanked by victims of gun violence as he signed the measures in his office. Republicans have decried the laws as onerous encroachments on Second Amendment rights.
Alaska helicopter crash kills three soldiers
JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska (AP) -- A U.S. Army team from Alabama is making its way to the Alaska Interior to the investigate a midair collision between two AH-64 Apache helicopters that killed three soldiers and injured a fourth late Thursday. Much is still not publicly known about the crash in the remote interior of the state that's 250 miles from Anchorage. The Army says the investigation will be conducted by a team from Fort Novosel that is expected to arrive by Saturday. The AH-64 Apache helicopters were from Fort Wainwright, based near Fairbanks. Little new information was released Friday about the crash.
