17 states urge recall of Kia, Hyundai cars
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Attorneys general in 17 states want the federal government to recall millions of Kia and Hyundai cars because they are too easy to steal. Most Kia and Hyundai cars sold in the United States over the last decade do not have engine immobilizers. This device prevents the engine from starting unless the key is present. Videos on social media have shown how people can start these cars with just a screwdriver and a USB cord. California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Thursday blamed Kia and Hyundai for failing to install standard safety features. Representatives for Kia and Hyundai did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Crash sparks fire on Conn. highway bridge
NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) -- A crash involving a fuel truck and a car sparked a fire on a major Connecticut highway bridge. Officials say the truck driver died and other people were injured. The wreck was reported shortly after 11 a.m. Friday on the southbound lanes of the Interstate 95 bridge between New London and Groton. Flames on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge spread to land below the Groton side of the bridge, but no buildings were damaged. Officials closed the highway in both directions during the blaze, but have since reopened the northbound side and two southbound lanes. State engineers determined there's no damage to the bridge's steel structure. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Ex-Boy Scout leader charged with abuse
DOVER, Del. (AP) -- Authorities say a former Boy Scout leader in Delaware has been charged with sexually abusing a boy more than 30 years ago. Sixty-six-year-old Gary Matta was arrested at his Newark home Thursday. Police say they were notified by the Boy Scouts in early 2020 of abusive sexual activity that occurred decades ago. Authorities say their investigation determined that the alleged victim joined the Scouts in 1989 at age 12, and that Matta was his Scout leader. Police say the boy began regularly visiting Matta's home and Matta eventually became his guardian. Matta is alleged to have sexually assaulted the boy repeatedly, perhaps hundreds of times, between 1989 and 1992. It is not immediately clear if Matta has a lawyer.
