Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr holiday
BEIRUT (AP) -- The holiday of Eid al-Fitr that follows the holy month of Ramadan has ushered in a day of prayers and joy for Muslims around the world. The celebration on Friday was marred by tragedy amid the explosion of conflict in Sudan, while a rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia raised hopes for less conflict in the Middle Est. After the Ramadan month of fasting, Muslims traditionally mark Eid al-Fitr with feasts and family visits. The start of the holiday is based on sightings of the new moon, which vary according to geographic location.
Canada's Trudeau hails VW plant
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says a massive Volkswagen electric battery plant being built in Ontario will create 3,000 jobs and represent a "generational investment" for Canada The German automaker last month announced plans for the plant in the town of St. Thomas, and Trudeau and other government ministers presented details at a news conference at the town's railway museum. The plans have been criticized by opposition lawmakers following revelations that Canada would grant $9.6 billion in subsidies to the automaker over 10 years. Trudeau defended the plans by saying they will create "good careers for years to come"
Sudan's military committed to civilian rule
KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) -- Sudan's top general says the military is committed to a transition to civilian rule, in his first speech since brutal fighting started between his forces and its powerful paramilitary rival. Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan made the remarks in a video message released early on Friday to mark Eid al-Fitr, the holiday at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Both sides issued statements saying they had agreed to a three-day holiday truce. But two previous cease-fires this week failed to take hold, and residents said they could still hear gunfire in the capital. The military earlier ruled out negotiations with the rival Rapid Support Forces, saying it would only accept its surrender.
UK deputy prime minister quits
LONDON (AP) -- U.K. Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab has resigned after an investigation into complaints he bullied civil servants. Raab quit Friday, the day after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak received the investigation findings. The complaints covered Raab's previous stint as justice secretary, a position he held again under Sunak, as well as his time as foreign secretary and Brexit secretary. Raab denied the allegations but said he quit because he vowed to do so if bullying complaints were substantiated. An attorney found Raab was intimidating and was unreasonably and persistently aggressive. Oliver Dowden has replaced Raab as deputy prime minister, while Alex Chalk was named justice secretary.
