NEW ULM -- Law enforcement is searching for a 28-year-old New Ulm man who fled police in a motor vehicle from Minnecon Park last weekend.
Zacchary T. Anderson, 514 State St. N., faces felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and misdemeanor driving after suspension and fleeing a peace officer by means other than a motor vehicle. Charges were filed in Brown County District Court and a Minnesota warrant was issued Dec. 22.
According to court documents, New Ulm Police on patrol at 1:22 p.m., Dec. 20 saw an unoccupied, grey 2006 Pontiac G6 with expired registration in Minnecon Park.
Police knew Anderson was dating the registered owner of the vehicle, also a witness, and learned Anderson's driver's license was revoked.
Police saw the vehicle travel westbound on Minnecon Drive, toward Front St., then stop near the railroad tracks at 2:48 p.m. An officer activated squad emergency lights and sirens, initiating a traffic stop.
Police approached the vehicle and recognized Anderson from prior contacts, talking on the phone. Police told Anderson to ask the vehicle owner come and get it.
Anderson asked police if he could drive the car to the vehicle owner. Police told him he could not drive and he sped away, loudly squealing tires, heading towards Front Street, turning north, without signaling or stopping at a stop sign.
Police went to the vehicle owner's residence at 2201 N. Broadway. She emerged from her back yard but Anderson fled on foot, behind the residence, over a large dirt pile, onto nearby railroad tracks, towards a cemetery.
Anderson was wearing a Fox snowmobile-style jacket, black hat, blue jeans and black face covering. Police got within about 10 yards of him, told him to stop, then lost sight of him.
The vehicle owner said Anderson had permission to driver her car, which was found about 100 yards south of the woman's Traulich Estates residence, on an unpaved trail. The car was towed to impound, pending forfeiture.
Police said there are three active warrants against Anderson on three separate Brown County files.
