COLLEGE FOOTBALL

MLC 42, WESTMINSTER 12

NEW ULM - Martin Luther College quarterback Brady Turriff and tight end Noah Huebner each set single-game program records during Saturday afternoon’s 42-14 UMAC win over Westminster.

The duo connected on eight completions, 165 yards and five touchdowns during the rout. Huebner’s five-TD game broke Ryan Kolander’s single-game receiving TD record that was set in 2009 against Maranatha Baptist. Turriff’s final line was 25-for-28, 363 yards and six touchdowns, breaking Greg Holzhueter’s record of five set in 2007 against Blackburn.

The past two weeks, Turriff has thrown for 727 yards and 10 TDs while Huebner has had 342 yards receiving and eight TDs.

The Knights once again jumped out to a halftime lead. It was 21-7 going into the break thanks to two Huebner touchdowns along with an 8-yard strike to Trenton Heyn in the final minute of the half.

Unlike the two weeks prior, the Knights finally put away their opponents in the second half, scoring three times in the third quarter to close out the contest. Jude Pederson continued his productivity, catching seven passes for 98 yards while Benjamin Vasold chipped in 66 yards receiving.

Arthur Robinson found more space in the second half. He finished the day with 81 yards on 19 carries.

The early offense helped force the Blue Jays into more passing situations, which allowed the Knights’ front-seven to put quarterbacks Trey Thomas and Anthony D’Amico under immense pressure. MLC’s defense had six sacks to go along with 10 tackles for loss. Matthew Kieselhorst and Daniel Reinke each had a pair of sacks while Joseph Dahlberg recorded 1.5 sacks. Jonah Mittelstadt made two tackles for loss.

One of the game’s key moments came at the start of the second quarter with the game tied at 7. Vasold muffed a punt, which gave Westminster the ball at the MLC 43. The Blue Jays drove all the way inside the MLC 10 before the defense forced three-straight incompletions. On the field goal attempt, the snap was low and the holder could not get the ball down, leading to a loss of 14 yards and a turnover on downs.

The Knights offense went on a nine-play, 79-yard scoring drive.

MLC has now won three-straight UMAC games and will look to exact revenge at Northwestern next week.
