NEW ULM -- New Ulm Cathedral scored touchdowns on its first seven offensive possessions of the game as the Greyhounds rolled to a 54-13 win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart Saturday afternoon in a Section 2, Nine-Player Tournament semifinals game.
Cathedral quarterback Eli Anderson threw three touchdown passes, two to Josh Forstner, and Alex Portner ran for two scores.
Anderson finished 8 of 11 passing for 136 yards and three scores.
Portner also became the first high school player in New Ulm to break the 3,000-career yard rushing mark.
Portner ended with 16 carries for 189 yards and now has 3,088 career rushing yards.
Portner entered that early in the second quarter on a 17-yard run.
Blake Aufderheide and Anderson scored on touchdown runs.
One of Anderson's scoring passes went to Ryler Collins for 47 yards.
Defensively, Even Blekestad had 17 tackles, two for a loss, with Camden Berg in on 14 tackles and Forstner 12 tackles and an interception. Lane Ruch had 9 tackles.
Cathedral, now 8-1, will meet Wabasso - a 26-15 winner over Red Rock Central - next Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Lakeview High School for the Section 2 Nine-Player crown.
"We worked really hard in our last seven practices for (BLHS)," Cathedral head coach Denny Lux said. "They were playing their best football in their last four games, so we adjusted some things. We got ready for things and our guys responded, and they took everything into this game. That is what makes coach [Jesse] Nosbush and myself proud of this group. They followed our lead and dominated on both sides of the ball."
Cathedral used just five plays to take an 8-0 lead on the Mustangs when sophomore Blake Aufderheide rumbled in from 23 yards out, and following a 2-point run from Hudson Lieser, grabbed a lead that they steadily built on.
A 51-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Josh Forstner and an Anderson-to-Collins 2-point conversion made it 16-0 after the first quarter.
Portner's 42-yard bolt for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion upped the lead to 24-0 three plays into the second quarter.
Cathedral kept the pedal to the metal when Anderson recovered a BLHS fumble.
That sparked an 11-play, 60-yard scoring drive that saw Portner go over the 3,000-career yard rushing mark and a second touchdown pass from Anderson to Forstner.
Anderson hooked up again with Collins for a 32- 0 lead at halftime.
"With this running game that we got, a lot of teams are putting a lot of guys up front to try to stop that," Lux said. "And of course Eli can throw the ball well and we have good receivers - Josh is a super athlete, he is 6-foot-3 and can run. And Ryler also made some big catches."
Portner's second touchdown of the game made it a 39-0 lead early in the third quarter before a safety and a 2-yard run by Anderson made it a 48-0 game.
A 14-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Collins had Cathedral ahead 54-7 before BLHS added a touchdown on the last play of the game.
