NEW ULM -- Martin Luther College showed it was better than a 25-7 loss in the first set but ultimately couldn't avoid a sweep as it fell 25-7, 25-17, 25-18 to the University of Northwestern Friday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball match on Friday.

Kenzie Loberger had six kills, two digs and an ace for the Knights, while Elsa Brauer had six kills and an ace. Greta Nolte had five kills and a block, while Anna Kieselhorst had 10 digs. Ella Walz had 15 set assists and three digs, and Kourtney Zech had 10 set assists and a dig.

Brauer had an early kill in Set 1, but Northwestern jumped out to a 16-3 advantage. Brauer and Hannah Rimpel added two more kills for MLC late, but it wasn't enough to jump-start the Knights as the Eagles won 25-7.

MLC started much stronger in Set 2, with an ace by Loberger and two kills by Nolte keeping the game at a 7-7 tie. Northwestern gained some distance with a 4-0 run, but a kill by Kiara Humann and two more by Loberger kept MLC in it, putting the score at 14-11. But Northwestern continued to push, going up 19-11. MLC hung around with two kills each from Nolte and Brauer to make it a 24-17 game, but Northwestern earned the final point to get the win.

MLC again held close early in Set 3, with an ace by Kieselhorst and a kill by Brauer setting the score at 8-8. Kills by Humann, Loberger, and ace by Rimpel and another kill by Humann saw MLC down just 15-14, but the Eagles went on a 7-1 run to go up 23-16. MLC fought back with kills from Brauer and Rimpel, but Northwestern was able to hold off the Knights to complete the sweep.

MLC (1-16, 0-5) hosts North Central University on Saturday.
