The 71 points scored by the New Ulm Cathedral football team Friday night in a 71-7 win over Mountain Lake Area was a new school record.
The previous record was 69 scored in 2011 in Heron Lake-Okabena.
"We had eight different players score touchdowns in the game," Cathedral head coach Denny Lux said. "And offensively we played just about perfect in the first half (leading 58-0). With our offensive line it did not matter who was carrying the ball and defensively we really swung to the ball -- we set the tone early in the game."
Lux said with the big lead at halftime, he was getting all of the Greyhounds backup players ready and getting that organized for the second half.
"All week long, Jesse [Nosbush, Cathedral defensive coordinator] and I were stressing to play perfect because we are capable of doing that, so the frame of mind was perfect for our players."
Lux said that the offense was split all game between five or six running backs who each carried the ball five times each.
Lux said that in this game he ran some things that the Greyhounds had been practicing with and needed to get some game experience with.
"Now we are able to watch these plays on film and really break them down. Every game leads to the next no matter what team it is that you are playing."
And the Cathedral offense continues to put points on the board. They have now scored 40 points or more in four of their six games.
"You can see that offensively [quarterback] Eli [Anderson] and [wide receiver] Josh Forstner are on the same page," Lux said. "They have had some throws the last few games where [Eli] is hitting Josh in full stride and that is an awesome plus for us because we do have a solid running game, so we are looking to expand our offense every game."
Lux also said that he wants to give a lot of credit to Mountain Lake.
"They played with a lot of heart and determination all game," he said. "They are short on numbers and deal with some injuries. But everybody at the game Friday when Mountain Lake finally scored their first touchdown of the season -- the crowd on both sides felt good for them."
The Greyhounds are at Renville County West on Wednesday.
RIESGRAF HAS GREAT GAME IN LOSS
Minnesota Valley Lutheran head football coach Jim Buboltz said that his team faced speed that they have not seen all year Friday in a road loss to Luverne.
"Their first two touchdowns came from their quarterback, who just broke loose for long scoring runs," Buboltz said. "But we answered back immediately. Ben had two kickoff returns for touchdowns of 90 yards and then a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
"And I have never had a kid take two back in the same game. And he almost had the trifecta -- he had two touchdowns on kickoff returns -- he had a 49-yard touchdown run and he got pulled down at the 10-yard line on a [potential] pick-six on an interception. So he almost had a touchdown in three different ways. I have never seen that before."
Buboltz said that offensively the Chargers had 363 yards of total offense in the game.
"And this was against a big and fast and strong Luverne team," he said. "Chase Tweit had 12 carries for 108 yards and Ben [Enter] had seven carries for 89 yards. Blake Sexton caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown."
Buboltz said that Luverne had two defensive touchdowns in the game with one on a pick-six and one on a fumble recovery.
"It was a shootout between the two teams," Buboltz said. "We turned the ball over three times and all three were really costly -- we moved the ball but get stymied inside the 20-yard line."
The Chargers scored the most points in a game (25) against a Luverne team that had allowed a total of 9 points in their first five games.

DEJA VU FOR EAGLES FOOTBALL TEAM Last year the New Ulm Eagles lost 28-22 at Tri-City United when the Eagles fumbled the ball inside the Titans 5-yard line.
Friday night a halfback pass and TCU touchdown and then New Ulm turnover on the TCU 11-yard line let the Titans score the game-winning touchdown in a 21-14 loss.
New Ulm head coach Derek Lieser said that this game reminded him of last year's contest.
"We felt like we had the game when we went up 14-7 [with six minutes left in the game], but we were not able to slam the door shut to put the nail in the coffin. Disappointed for the kids but not disappointed in the kids."
Lieser said that the halfback pass that led to the game-tying touchdown by TCU was something that they had practiced against.
"They had not show that but we did rep it this week just in case they did run it," Lieser said. "We got caught a little bit flat-footed -- that was a big play for them,"
New Ulm travels to St. Peter Wednesday.
