New Ulm takes tough loss to St. Peter

NEW ULM -- While New Ulm staged several strong runs during a Big South Conference volleyball match against St. Peter, it ultimately was unable to complete any comebacks as the Eagles fell to the Saints 25-20, 27-25, 25-14 on Tuesday.

Karly Meier led the Eagles with 9 kills, while Calli Koop had six kills and 15 digs. Mckenna Hulke had 20 set assists and eight digs, while Mazy Kitzberger had three kills and nine digs.

New Ulm found itself down 15-5 in the first set, then 19-8 before the Eagles called a timeout. Soon after the break, New Ulm put together a 5-0 run, with Leah Brustad and Meier earning kills, to cut the lead down to 21-15. New Ulm continued to battle, with kills from MaKenna LeGare and Meier helping to get the lead down to 24-20, but St. Peter was able to close out the set to end the comeback.

New Ulm started out much stronger in Set 2, with a kill by Koop giving the Eagles a 12-8 lead as St. Peter called a timeout. St. Peter used the timeout to recover and tie the game at 14, but New Ulm pushed back with a quick 4-0 run, with Koop and Brustad both earning kills, to go up 21-15. But this time it was the Saints that staged the comeback, tying the game at 24 before ultimately going on to win 27-25.

St. Peter controlled Set 3 from the jump, going up 8-4 early. A kill by Kitzberger helped New Ulm cut the lead back to 10-9, but St. Peter went on a 5-0 run to go up 10-19 once again. Meier had tow more kills to make it a 21-13 game, but St. Peter closed out the set with a 4-1 run.

New Ulm (8-12) hosts Mankato East on Thursday.
