WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

NEW ULM -- The Martin Luther College volleyball team kicked off Homecoming Saturday on campus with a 3-0 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Despite the sweep, the Knights came out with a lot of energy and put the Yellowjackets under pressure, particularly in the first set, which Superior would win 25-23. The opening set went back-and-forth with seven tie scores and two lead changes.

The Knights featured a balanced attack in the first. Greta Nolte, Kiara Humann and Hannah Rodmyre each had three kills with Humann hitting .200 and Rodmyre hitting .400. Freshmen Kenzie Loberger and Hannah Rimpel each contributed two kills. The Knights’ biggest advantage came at the service line, where MLC had two aces and two errors compared to four errors by the Yellowjackets.

Still, behind a .258 hitting percentage and five total blocks, Superior came back and edged out MLC.

The Yellowjackets used that momentum to control the second set, where they hit .323 compared to MLC’s .100. Superior once again dominated at the net with three more blocks in that set.

The Knights bounced back and were competitive once again in set three, where there were six ties and three lead changes. Neither team found much success offensively in the third, MLC hitting -.019 and Superior hitting .180. Superior duo of Taylor Tollefson and Makenna Hohbein each had six kills to clinch the match.

Rodmyre and Humann led MLC overall. Rodmyre hit .214 and Humann hit .250 on the match. Ella Walz led the way with 14 assists. Anna Kieselhorst had 13 digs and also was perfect on 18 serve receptions.

MEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY

NORTHFIELD -- The MLC men’s cross-country team continued its strong start to the season with a statement performance at the Running of the Cows on Saturday at Carleton College.

In addition to a 12th-place finish in a competitive field of 20 teams, the Knights finished top amongst four UMAC teams present, edging out UW-Superior by 23 individual places.

“Today’s race results are evidence of the effort, determination and dedication each of the guys on the team brings to practice every day,” coach Mark Weinkauf said. “I’m extremely proud of their performance.”

The Knights had two top-20 finishers in the 326-runner field. Senior Silas Ebeling finished 17th with a time of 26:37.0 and freshman Logan Korthals 26:39.4 finished in 20th. They were the top finishers of any UMAC runners.

“Silas had a fantastic race,” Weinkauf said. “Logan followed up his previous [PR] performance with another excellent result. Both guys nearly broke their PRs on a course I don’t consider to be a PR course.”

Junior Eliott Heiderich placed 80th with his race of 27:43.9. Freshman Thomas Moldenhauer ran a career-best 27:58.2. Levi Schuetze was the final counting runner for the Knights with a time of 29:11.8.

“Eliott, Tom and Levi rounded out the top five with impressive results, with Tom achieving a PR,” Weinkauf said. “I’m really excited for the rest of the season.”
