Eagles hold off Saints 1-0

By Sarah Prouty 2 min read

NEW ULM -- The New Ulm Eagles and St. Peter Saints went head to head in an intense showdown on Thursday night in a Big South Conference boys soccer game.

Both teams fought hard to the end, but it was the Eagles who finished strong with a 1-0 win.

The ball flew up and down the field and while there were close attempts, no goals were made until the second half of the game.

The goal that gave New Ulm the win was scored by John Hoffmann and assisted on by Logan Goblirsch following a sideline throw-in with 8:40 left. The team worked as one solid unit to mark up on their opponents during this swift sideline throw-in.

Both teams brought their A-game and gave it their all, but New Ulm goalie Brevinn Vandermouse gave it a little extra and had six saves to preserve his shutout. Many players on both teams showed fluid moves of headers and bunts that flew across the field.

Eagles head coach Tim Plocher kept his players encouraged throughout the close contest. New Ulm fans and the New Ulm Eagles cheerleaders kept spirits high also throughout the game. It was a win the Eagles were definitely looking for following a 3-1 loss to Orono on Sept. 26.

New Ulm, now 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference, is at Tri-City United on Monday in a big 7 p.m. conference matchup. TCU is 10-1-1 overall on the year and sits ahead of New Ulm in the Big South Conference, Black Division.
