Area roundup: MVL has 2nd-place finish in USC tourney

MVL TAKES GOES 5-1 AT USC TOURNEY

WELLS -- Minnesota Valley Lutheran fell to Austin 27-25, 25-19 but defeated United South Central 25-21, 28-26, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 25-20, 25-14, Maple River 25-11, 25-27, Blue Earth Area 24-26, 25-15 and New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 20-25, 25-9 in a prep volleyball tournament at United South Central on Saturday to place second.

Jenna Bates had 28 kills and 33 digs for the Chargers, while Olivia Hammer had 35 kills and 28 digs. Graysie Black had 35 digs and 87 set assists, and Taryn Gunderson had 40 digs.

MVL (14-5) hosts Maple River on Tuesday.

LCWM 3, ST. CLAIR 2

ST. CLAIR -- Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial edged by St. Clair 13-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-14, 15-12 in a South Central Conference volleyball match on Saturday.

Alice Hollerich led the Knights with 22 kills, while Nev Parsons had 16 kills and 25 digs. Katie Hanson had 10 kills, Reese Palmer had 47 assists and Emilee David had 23 digs.

LCWM (14-5, 5-1) plays at Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday.

NICOLLET WINS SIBLEY EAST LOWER BRACKET

ARLINGTON -- Sibley East fell to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 25-10, 25-10 but defeated Sibley East 25-18, 25-15, Dassel-Cokato 25-14, 14-25, 5-3, Medford 20-25, 25-13, 15-10 and Sibley East again 25-19, 25-18 to win the lower bracket of a prep volleyball tournament at Sibley East on Saturday.

Madison Kettner led the Raiders with 27 kills and 19 digs, while Jazmyn Goettlicher had 19 kills and five blocks throughout the tournament. Megan Soost had 15 kills and four blocks, and Zoie Rengstorf had 27 set assists. Lydia Martens had 28 set assists and six aces. Chloe Kachelmeier had 26 digs.

MADELIA GOES 3-1 AT ST. JAMES TOURNEY

ST. JAMES -- Madelia fell to St. James Area but defeated New Ulm Cathedral, Edgerton and Pipestone Area to go 3-1 at a prep volleyball tournament on Saturday.

Grace Tatro led the Blackhawks with 12 kills and eight digs during the tournament, while Addie Odegard had nine kills and two digs. Carissa Sorenson had eight kills and nine digs. Avery Tatro had 34 set assists and 21 digs with five aces, and Emmy Johnson had 34 digs and six aces.
