NEW ULM -- Martin Luther College administration has announced Hans Steinbrenner as the head men’s basketball coach for the 2026-27 season.
“I’m honored to serve in a role that supports the preparation of future teachers and pastors,” Steinbrenner said. “The opportunity to mentor young men through basketball - helping them grow in leadership, character, faith and service while preparing for lives of ministry - is both humbling and exciting.”
The coaching role will be in addition to Steinbrenner’s duties as the athletic director. He started at MLC in that capacity on Sept. 8. Read that release here.
Steinbrenner has vast experience in basketball, including in coaching roles. He was an assistant coach and director of basketball operations for the Idaho Stampede, the D-League affiliate of the Utah Jazz at the time, from 2014-2016.
He was also on staff with the Austin Spurs (G League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs) from 2016-2017 as a video coordinator.
He continued to work in basketball from 2017-2026 in administrative roles, including helping to launch the Wisconsin Herd in 2017 as the director of business operations.
Most recently, he was the vice president (2019-20) and the president (2020-26) of the Osceola Magic, helping relocate the team from Lakeland to Kissimmee in 2023. While Steinbrenner was president, the franchise won the 2021 G League Championship, finished runner-up in 2025 and finished the last three regular seasons at the No. 1 seed in the league.
Prior to his professional career, Steinbrenner was a student manager with the men’s basketball team at the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, with an emphasis in statistics.
The Boise, Idaho, native attended Centennial High School where he earned three varsity letters in basketball and was a part of the Patriots’ 5A state tournament appearances in 2008 and 2010.
