Eagles unable to match Trojans in 2nd half

NEW ULM -- After a scoreless first half, the offenses for New Ulm and Worthington began to put up points in the second half of a Big South Conference boys soccer match on Tuesday.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the goals were not evenly distributed, as the Trojans came away with a 3-1 victory at New Ulm High School.

"We weren't watching on that corner kick," New Ulm head coach Tim Plocher said. "We just weren't ready for it. They went quick and they shot … Unfortunately, that's our weak point this season, where a lot of our goals [on us] have been corner kicks. We take those away and it's a lot closer game.

Worthington's final two goals of the match came off of corner kicks as the Trojans capitalized on their set pieces.

"We've just got to be first to the ball and not be afraid to be hit by a soccer ball that's coming at you at 30 miles per hour," Plocher said. "That's what it comes down to. They're not afraid of it, and that's how they get goals. They know if they get that goal, it puts them up above, and we've got to know if we stop them from doing that, it can go our way."

Logan Goblirsch had the lone goal for New Ulm, assisted by Methodious Amoah. Brevvin Vandermause had 11 saves.

Both teams had a few chances in the first half to score, with Worthington's coming earlier on and New Ulm coming on strong later in the half. Levi Johnson had a chance with a free kick with 10 minutes to play in the half, but Worthington goalie Adrian Flores Andrade made the save, while another Johnson shot with seven minutes to play missed just wide as the half ended scoreless.

"They have a good goalie," Plocher said. "So many of them went just wide or just over."

Worthington scored the first goal of the game, with Andy Guzman Hernandez taking a crosser from Eiby Ramos and putting it in the net in the 54th minute. New Ulm responded just five minutes later, as a series of shots hit off the goalpost to be finally finished off by Goblirsch to tie it.

However, Worthington scored twice off of corner kicks, once with 15 minutes to play and another with 14 minutes to go, to go up 3-1. New Ulm was unable to respond this time as the Trojans sealed the victory.

Despite the loss, Plocher thought his team played a much better game than New Ulm's last loss where the Eagles fell 6-1 to Mankato West. Plocher hopes his team has the opportunity to face the Trojans again and see if they can come away with the win.

"They've been eyeing us up since last season when we knocked them out in the section championship game," Plocher said. "I hope we get to play them again, and I know we have what it takes to beat them."
