Area roundup: Goblirsch lifts New Ulm boys by St. Peter

NEW ULM 3, ST. PETER 2
ST. PETER -- Logan Goblirsch got to play the hero on Tuesday night when his goal with 4:37 left in the game lifted the New Ulm Eagles to a 3-2 win over St. Peter in a Big South Conference boys soccer game.
Levi Johnson set up Goblirsch's game-winner with an assist. Johnson also scored the first two goals of the game for New Ulm, the first coming on an assist by Colten Evers in the first half and the second coming on an assist by Goblirsch with 18:08 left in the game.
St. Peter tied it up after Johnson's second goal, but Goblirsch, Johnson and the Eagles got the last laugh with the go-ahead goal in the final five minutes.
Eagles goalie Brevinn Vandermause had seven saves. New Ulm had eight shots on goal.
New Ulm is at Marshall for a Big South Conference, nondivision game on Thursday night.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
SPRINGFIELD 3, CATHEDRAL 2
SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield came back from a 2-1 hole to defeat New Ulm Cathedral in five sets on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match, winning 25-21, 21-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-8.
The Tigers were led in victory by Kendall Krueger, who had 20 kills, 11 digs and two aces, while Harlow Moody had 10 kills, three aces and two blocks and Delayna Johnson had seven kills. Gabriella Schenk also had six kills for Springfield, while Olivia Milbrath had six kills, Belle Groebner had 15 digs and Faelynn Williams had 44 set assists, eight digs and two aces.
The Greyhounds were led by Jayde Altermatt, who had 12 kills, eight digs and three aces, while Brynn Wilfahrt had six kills and 16 digs and Maddy Hazuka had five kills and 19 digs. Ashlyn Hillesheim added 27 set assists, 12 digs and four kills for Cathedral, while Thea Paszkiewicz had nine digs and two aces and Morgan Beranek had eight digs.
Springfield (2-2, 1-1) is at Sleepy Eye on Thursday night, while Cathedral (1-13, 0-2) is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday night.
GFW 3, SLEEPY EYE 0
GIBBON -- Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Sleepy Eye 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 in a Tomahawk Divison volleyball match on Tuesday.
GFW was led by Kora Schwarzrock, who had 14 kills, while Ella Nachreiner had eight kills and five blocks and Chloe Henrichs had eight kills and 13 digs. Kinley Bruns had a team-high 23 digs for the Firebirds also, while Maren Kemkes had 18 set assists and Natalie Ahlbrecht had 14 set assists and five blocks.
For Sleepy Eye, Karly Wendinger had eight kills, while Kenley Jensen had five kills, 10 digs and tow aces. Ava Kunkel had 16 set assists and 11 digs, and Jace Schauman had 15 set assists.
Sleepy Eye (4-5) hosts Springfield on Thursday, while GFW (2-1, 1-0) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary's on Thursday in Gibbon.
ST. MARY'S 3, BLHS 0
SLEEPY EYE -- Sleepy Eye St. Mary's swept Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 25-8, 25-21, 25-15 in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Tuesday.
Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights with 19 kills and six digs, while Audra Hoffmann had 13 kills and nine digs. Brynne Ibberson had 28 set assists and six digs, and Taylor Mathiowetz had 13 set assists.
St. Mary's (10-1, 2-0) plays at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday.
WABASSO 3, LESTER PRAIRIE 0
LESTER PRAIRIE -- Wabasso swept Lester Prairie 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Tuesday.
Kenley Guetter led the Rabbits with 12 kills and two total blocks, while Cassie Bliss had 17 set assists and seven kills. Britta Brand had eight digs, and Lanna Janerio Dolan had 12 set assists. Alexa Remiger had five aces, and Cendyll Daub had five kills and four aces.
Wabasso (2-4, 1-1) plays at Cedar Mountain on Thursday.
CEDAR MOUNTAIN 3, NICOLLET 1
CEDAR MOUNTAIN -- Cedar Mountain defeated Nicollet 19-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 in a nonconference volleyball match on Tuesday.
Reagyn Kleinschmidt had 17 kills, 15 set assists, seven digs, three blocks and two aces for the Cougars, while Kendra Erickson had 16 kills, 22 set assists and 10 digs. Aubrey Steffl had 15 digs and six kills.
Madison Kettner led the Raiders with 11 kills and five set assists, while Jacelyn Wilking had seven kills. Jazmyn Goettlicher had five kills and six digs, while Zoie Rengstorf had 15 set assists. Chloe Kachelmeier had 10 digs, and Megan Soost had five blocks.
Cedar Mountain (4-1) hosts Wabasso on Thursday, while Nicollet (2-3) plays at Madelia on Thursday.
LSH 3, LCWM 1
LAKE CRYSTAL -- Le Sueur-Henderson defeated Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 25-17 in a South Central Conference volleyball match on Tuesday.
Maddie Madsen led the Knights with 12 kills, while Alice Hollerich had 11 kills. Reese Palmer had 28 set assists.
LCWM (6,4- 1-1) plays at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday.

HORSTMAN TAKES 2ND AT LIONS MEET
NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA -- Sibley East's Gage Horstman placed second out of 169 boys runners at the Norwood Young America Lions Cross-Country Meet on Tuesday, running a 15:59.82.
That finish helped the Sibley East boys finish second overall out of 25 teams behind the winning team Mankato West.
Also leading the area in the meet, Sibley East's Julio Alejandro placed eighth (16:46.44), while Minnesota Valley Lutheran's Titus Kohls placed 12th (17:06.8). Sibley East's Jacksen Pomplun took 13th (17:07.06) and Sleepy Eye St. Mary's/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral's Max Fischer took 28th (17:41.66). Sibley East's Aiden Christeson took 30th (17:42.56), while Madelia's Caleb DeCann took 40th (17:57.96), Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop's Juan Sunun-Perez took 41st (17:58.04) and Sibley East's Ellyot Allen took 46th (18:13.78).
The girls side of the meet was won by Westonka, but the top team from the area was MVL, which took 13th. MVL was led by Faith Peters, who took 32nd (21:16.5), while SM/SE/NUC was led by Emma Hagen, who tan a 21:18.01 to finish in 34th place. Also from the area in the top 50 was Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet's Evie Jones, who took 46th (21:31.12). MVL also saw Natalie Matzke finish strong with a 55th-place finish (22:17.92), while SM/SE/NUC also had Millie Lax take 62nd (22:38.25). The GFW girls were led by Kelby Bruns, who took 84th (23:40.43), while Lucy Dvorak finished 103rd (24:46.34).
There were 132 girls runners.
MONDAY
PREP VOLLEYBALL
SIBLEY EAST 3, MAPLE RIVER 0
ARLINGTON -- Sibley East swept Maple River on Monday night in a South Central Conference volleyball match, winning 29-27, 25-14, 25-15.
Karmyn Dose had five kills and four blocks to lead the Wolverines in the win, while Ellie Goettl had four aces and Maelynn Thoele had three aces. Olivia Kennard had a team-high 19 digs from the back row, while Harper Drexler had 19 set assists and Kennedy Hahn added 14 set assists.
The Wolverines (1-6, 1-1) are at St. Clair for an SCC match on Thursday.
