Knights take down Waldorf in thrilling home opener
NEW ULM -- Women’s soccer capped off a perfect week on Saturday afternoon with a thrilling 3-2 win against Waldorf.
It was the first home match of the season for the Knights.
Senior Katie Schoeneck had a hand in all three MLC goals. She opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a long-range strike that came after the goalkeeper saved an Anna Kramer shot near the top of the box. Waldorf equalized in the 44th minute and the game was tied at half.
Schoeneck gave MLC its second lead in the 52nd minute, but Waldorf once again leveled the match up about 10 minutes later.
The decisive goal came in the 77th minute when Schoeneck played a perfect through ball to freshman Evangeline Vogel, who found the bottom left corner to score her first career collegiate goal, which proved to be the match winner.
Another freshman, Reese Krause Staebell, played the second half in goal for the Knights and made three saves while conceding just a single goal.
MLC had a 13-6 edge in shots on goal.

Knights come up short in ill-disciplined match
NEW ULM, Minn. – The Knights had a one-player advantage for nearly 65 minutes of Saturday’s match against Waldorf, but were unable to use it in a 3-2 home loss that saw three players receive red cards.
Waldorf’s Jedidiah Omoghan scored twice in the first 16 minutes to give the Warriors what appeared to be a comfortable lead. However, MLC’s Silas Gawrisch scored in the 19th minute on a cross by Abraham Schlomer and then in the 24th minute, Omoghan was sent off for violent conduct against MLC’s Matthew Nelson, leaving Waldorf a player down.
It took MLC until the 51st minute to capitalize on the advantage when Jin Lee tied the match at 2-2. After the goal, the Knights struggled to maintain momentum and find the go-ahead goal.
Instead, in the 77th minute, Gabriel Benedito put Waldorf ahead for good with a looping header that was perfectly placed over the outstretched hand of MLC goalkeeper Nicholas Russ.
The dramatics continued throughout the final minutes. MLC’s Joshua Krenke received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 89th minute, both of his yellow cards were for unsporting conduct. Waldorf’s Lucas Ovejero was then sent off with 30 seconds left when he received his second yellow card for unsporting conduct.
In total, the match featured six yellow cards and three reds.

Knights earn first win, split matches at Buena Vista
STORM LAKE, Iowa – MLC volleyball earned its first win of the season in its first match of the Central Bank Triangular at Buena Vista on Saturday.
MLC 3, ROCKFORD 0
The Knights did not have dominant offensive numbers in the win, but found a variety of ways to score.
They had 12 service aces and five blocks to go along with 29 kills.
Kenzie Loberger led the team in kills with seven and was second on the team in digs with nine and aces with three. Ella Walz had a team-high 12 assists and added five kills.
Defensively, Hannah Rodmyre was dominant at the net, recording four blocks. Anna Kieselhorst had 18 digs.
BUENA VISTA 3, MLC 0
MLC failed to reach the .100 mark in any of the three sets against the hosting Beavers as offense was a struggle.
The Knights found just 19 kills, three blocks and a single ace in the dominating BVU win.
Loberger was a bright spot once again, notching eight kills and hitting .231. Kourtney Zech had 10 assists.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Knights struggle to slow down Concordia
MEQUON, Wis. – MLC’s defense knew it had a tough test on Saturday afternoon against Concordia University – Wisconsin’s high-octane offense.
The Knights were unable to slow CUW down in a 48-13 road loss to slip to 0-2 to start the season. The Falcons mustered an eye-popping 556 total yards to go along with their six touchdowns. CUW punted just twice.
Falcons quarterback Roman Funk threw for 347 yards and five TDs. Jack Bradley had 154 receiving yards and three touchdown catches.
MLC on the other hand struggled to move the ball, amassing 239 total yards. Brady Turriff threw for 174 yards and, as in week one, found most of his success through Jude Pederson, who had 106 yards receiving that included an acrobatic one-handed touchdown grab. Benjamin Vasold caught the second touchdown of the game.
The Knight had just 65 rushing yards.
Defensively, most of the team’s leaders came in the defensive backfield as they tried to slow the CUW passing attack. Safeties Carson Burow and Trevor Hueske had 12 and eight total tackles, respectively. Corner Jasper Lawrenz made 11. Ethan Melso also made 11 total tackles, including a tackle for loss.
Freshman Gabriel Nottling once again showed his big leg in the punting game, booming four punts for more than 50 yards.
