PREP VOLLEYBALL
ST. MARY'S 3, WABASSO 1
WABASSO -- Sleepy Eye St. Mary's held off Wabasso in four sets Thursday in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match, winning 25-14, 16-25, 25-23, 26-24.
The Knights were led in victory by Morgan Mathiowetz, who had 18 kills and 12 digs, while Audra Hoffmann had nine kills, 14 digs and four blocks. Olivia Schieffert added five kills for the Knights, while Brynne Ibberson had 19 set assists and Taylor Mathiowetz had 10 set assists.
The Rabbits were led by Kenley Guetter, who had 12 kills and 11 digs, while Cendyll Daub had nine kills, four aces, one solo block and five block assists and Kylee Samyn had seven kills. Cassie Bliss added nine digs, 18 set assists and two block assists also for Wabasso, while Lanna Janerio Dolan had 18 set assists and three block assists, and Ava Samyn had one solo block.
St. Mary's plays in the Sleepy Eye High School tournament on Saturday, while Wabasso is at Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Monday.
CLEVELAND 3, NICOLLET 0
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland swept Nicollet 28-26, 25-13, 25-17 on Thursday in a Valley Division volleyball match.
Madison Kettner led Nicollet with five kills and five digs, while Megan Soost had four kills, two aces and two blocks and Payten Otto had four kills and four digs. Also for Nicollet, Chloe Kachelmeier had 10 digs, while Lydia Martens had seven assists.
Nicollet is at Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.
MCW 3, MADELIA 0
SHERBURN -- Madelia was swept by Martin County West in a Valley Division volleyball match Thursday as the Mavericks won 25-18, 25-16, 25-9.
Grace Tatro had eight kills and eight digs to lead Madelia, while Carissa Sorenson had four kills and three solo blocks and Avery Tatro had 13 set assists. Emmy Johnson added seven digs for Madelia.
Madelia competes in the Sleepy Eye High School tournament on Saturday.
BOYS SOCCER
TCU 5, NEW ULM 3
NEW ULM -- The New Ulm Eagles fell 5-3 to Tri-City United on Thursday in a Big South Conference boys soccer game.
The Eagles led 1-0 and 2-1 before TCU came back to take a 3-2 lead at the half. After tying it up at 3-all in the second half, the Eagles allowed TCU to score two more times to take the win.
Logan Goblirsch scored the first goal of the night on an assist by Jace Lohman with 25:48 left in the opening half. Levi Johnson scored the second goal for New Ulm on an assist by John Hoffmann wit 17:39 left in the opening half.
Johnson scored the last goal for New Ulm in the second half on an assist by Goblirsch with 10:36 left to play before TCU quickly took the lead back for good.
Eagles goalie Brevinn Vandermause had six saves in net.
New Ulm hosts Mankato West on Monday.
GIRLS SOCCER
NEW ULM 9, TCU 2
MONTGOMERY -- The New Ulm Eagles cruised to a 9-2 win over Tri-City United on Thursday in a Big South Conference girls soccer game.
New Ulm scored 48 seconds into the game on a goal By Jes Skoglund, assisted on by Allie Nelson. The second goal came 1:48 into the game on a goal by Amelia Hinkle, assisted on by Morgan Zimanski. Zimanski scored on an assist by Skoglund for the third goal before Nelson scored on an assist by Grace Barie. Skoglund scored again on an assist by Nelson before Zimanski, Hinkle and Skoglund added unassisted goals. Piper Kapolczynski scored the last New Ulm goal on an assist by Kaitlyn Ries. Greta Berger had four saves in net for New Ulm.
New Ulm hosts New Prague at noon on Saturday.
PREP CROSS-COUNTRY
MVL COMPETES AT GERRY SMITH INVITE
MONTGOMERY -- Minnesota Valley Lutheran competed at the Gerry Smith Cross-Country Invitational on Thursday, with the boys team taking 13th out of 27 teams and the girls taking 16th out of 21 teams.
Titus Kohls led the MVL boys with a season-best time of 17:41.4, good enough for 17th place. Tucker Kohls finished 59th with a season-best time of 19:20.6, while Solomon Stoering took 75th with a time of 19:37.3.
The MVL girls were led by Faith Peters, who ran a season-best time of 22:02.2 to take 42nd, while Natalie Matzke ran a season-best time of 23:13.2 to take 66th. Also for the MVL girls, Rebekah Vlieger took 123rd with a time of 26:20.5, also a season-best time.
SM/SE/NUC COMPETES IN TRACY
TRACY -- The Sleepy Eye St. Mary's/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral cross-country team ran at the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panther Invitational on Thursday.
The girls team was incomplete, while the boys team finished seventh.
The SM/SE/NUC boys were led by Max Fischer, who ran a season-best time of 18:00.3 to take fifth, while Oziel Lozano ran a season-best time of 20:25.3 for 33rd and Eli Pyan took 55th with a season-best time of 22:26.4.
The SM/SE/NUC girls had just two run, but both had strong finishes. Emma Hagen ran a season-best time of 22:00.7 to take ninth, while Millie Lax ran a season-best time of 23:12.4 to take 15th.
