Lakers down Pirates, on to semis

NEW PRAGUE — The Hanska Lakers advanced to the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament semifinals with a 5-3 win over the Windom Pirates on Friday night.

Hanska now faces the Elrosa Saints at 6:30 p.m. in New Prague on Saturday.

Aaron Portner picked up the win for the Lakers, striking out four and allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits in six innings. At the plate, Kevin Larson was 2 for 3 with a run scored, while Brady Mosenden had a hit and two RBIs.

Windom opened the scoring in the third inning on a sacrifice fly, then made it a 2-0 game in the fourth inning as the Pirates scored a run on a hit, an error, a bunt and a groundout. Mosenden tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, singling to bring home Chris Knowles and Larson scored on an error on the same play. Larson put an error into play in the fifth inning to score Sam Knowles, then a Mosenden sacrifice fly later in the inning plated Jake Finstand to make it a 4-2 game. Windom cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth inning, but a Tanner Olson groundout in the seventh brought home Chris Knowles for the final run of the game, as Hanska held on for the win.
