SPRINGFIELD -- The Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys won a cross-country opener in Springfield on Friday with 40 points, edging out the win over Mankato Loyola/Cleveland/St. Clair, who finished second with 42 points.
Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin took third (79), while Sleepy Eye St. Mary's/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral took fourth (80) and Springfield/Cedar Mountain took fifth (128).
The girls side was won by Loyola/Cleveland/St. Clair (19), while Springfield/CM took second (60), Wabasso took third (73) and MVL took fourth (88).
Rollie Matejcek of Loyola/Cleveland/St. Clair won the boys meet with a time of 17:47. MVL's Titus Kohls took second (18:00.2), followed by SESM/SE/NUC's Max Fischer (18:31.6) and Levi Hagen (18:47). MVL also had Tucker Kohls and Solomon Stoering finish strong in the top 10, with Kohls taking sixth (19:22.4) and Stoering taking seventh (19:29.7).
The MVL boys also saw Jamis Martens take 12th (20:17.5), while Levi Martens (20:44.3, 14th), Weston Scriver (20:50, 15th) and Aiden Weisensel (20:51.9, 16th) also turned in solid times.
Madelia and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop also had runners compete despite not fielding a complete team. Madelia was led on the boys' side by Ethan Christensen (20:39.1, 13th), while GFW was led by Isaac Beckendorf (20:52.3, 17th). Springfield/CM was led on the boys' side by Phinehas Bislew (22:00.7, 26th), while Wabasso's top boys runner was Camden Novak, who took 41st (24:10.1).
The girls 5,000-meter race was won by Loyola/Cleveland/St. Clair's Charlotte Meyer, who took first with a time of 19:08.3. From the area, Wabasso's Elsie Leopold had the top time of 20:57 to take second, while MVL's Faith Peters took eighth (22:32.1) and Springfield/CM's Marley Hewitt and Farrah Dauer took ninth (22:32.6) and 10th (22:34.7), respectively. SESM/SE/NUC's Emma Hagen finished just outside the top 10 in the girls race with a time of 23:19.9 to take 11th, while Wabasso's Gracelyn Fogelson (23:34, 12th) and Isabel Plaetz (23:35.1, 13th) were just behind. Springfield/CM's Lydia Dauer took 14th (23:41.6), while SESM/SE/NUC's Millie Lax took 15th (24:05.2). GFW didn't field a complete girls team but was led by Kelby Bruns and Kinley Bruns, who took 22nd (26:28.4) and 23rd (26:38.6), respectively.
