Leavenworth falls to late Richmond outburst

CHASKA - The Leavenworth Orioles were feeling good after tying things up at 1-all in the sixth inning, but the Richmond Royals found their offensive groove soon after.
With two runs in the bottom of the sixth and five more in the eighth, the Royals rolled to an 8-1 win in the first round of the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday at Athletic Park.
Richmond struck first in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single from Goose Hadley to score Tyler Prom, who walked earlier with one out. Orioles right-hander Mark Anderson settled in after that and kept it a 1-0 game until the sixth inning, when the Royals got two more runs off him on a two-run Hadley double to lead 3-1. This came after the Orioles were finally starting to gain some momentum in the top of the sixth with a leadoff single by Dylan Hillesheim and a two-out RBI single by Jevan Richert to tie it at 1-1.
The Orioles sent Sacred Heart draftee Jack Howard to the mound in the seventh and Howard had a 1-2-3 inning, but the Royals started swinging against the next inning, with a leadoff single from Prom being followed with a single from Cole Schmitz and a two-run double by Hadley to give the Royals a 4-1 lead. RBI singles from Grady Notch and Jack Boos made it a 6-1 game, prompting the Orioles to send Springfield draftee Madden Lendt to the bump. Lendt forced a fielder’s choice at home for the second out, but back-to-back walks with the bases full scored Cooper Notch and Prom for an 8-1 lead.
Royals right-hander Dalton Thelen retired the side in order in the ninth to earn the complete-game win and move the Royals on to next weekend.
Hadley finished the day 3 for 4 with his big double and four RBIs to lead the Royals at the plate. Thelen struck out 10 in his nine innings of work, allowing seven hits and one walk for one run.
Hillesheim was 2 for 4 to lead the Orioles at the dish, while Jackson Huiras was 2 for 4 and Richert was 1 for 4 with his game-tying RBI in the sixth. Anderson took the loss in six innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six.
The Royals play the Cologne Hollanders in the second round of the state tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday in Jordan at the Mini Met. Leavenworth finishes its season with a 14-10 record.
