CHASKA - The New Ulm Brewers broke into both the hits and runs columns during the sixth inning of a Class A Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament opener against the Minnetonka Monarchs, but the Monarchs' offense was too much to overcome in the end as Minnetonka ran away with a 14-3 win Saturday at Chaska Athletic Park.
The game ended in eight innings due to the 10-run lead rule.
Mitch Bockenstedt took the loss for New Ulm in five innings of work. The veteran righty allowed six hits and no walks for three runs. Tate Becker, with a cast on his left hand, pitched two innings in relief. The right-hander allowed 12 hits and no walks for 11 runs, eight earned, while striking out three.
Blaine Olson also pitched an inning in relief for New Ulm, allowing one hit and two walks for no runs while striking out three.
Ayden Jensen led the Brewers at the plate, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Jake Marsh got the win for Minnetonka in a 5 2/3-innings start, allowing five hits and no walks for three runs, two earned, while striking out seven.
The Monarchs had seven players with multiple hits in the win, led by Will Koeppen, who was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Mike Davis was 2 for 4 with five RBIs.
Minnetonka went up 2-0 in the third after an error scored Reid LaFrenz, who had a leadoff single, and Gus Berger, who doubled with one out. With Bockenstedt coming out in the sixth inning after allowing a leadoff single, the Monarchs struck again, this time for four runs and a 6-0 lead off Becker.
New Ulm got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out single by JT Hoffmann. Cole Ranweiler followed with a single of his own before Jensen singled on a grounder to score the first New Ulm run of the day. Sam Keckeisen then singled to right to score two and have the Brewers down 6-3.
The Monarchs got those three runs back and more in the seventh when they had six runners come home for a 12-3 lead. Koeppen's two-run single in the inning did the most damage for the Monarchs, who had seven hits in the inning.
The Monarchs scored their last two runs in the eighth on a Jake Musgjerd single and a bases-loaded walk by Davis.
Minnetonka moves on to a second-round game this coming Saturday at 11 a.m. in Jordan against the St. Paul Mudhens. New Ulm ends its season with a 21-5 record.
