Region 2C state qualifier games in New Ulm Friday

NEW ULM -- Friday night at Johnson Park and Mueller Park in New Ulm will feature four teams battling it out for the final two Class C Amateur Baseball State Tournament spots from Region 2C.

Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. first pitches.

At Johnson Park, the fifth-seeded Springfield Tigers will meet the seventh-seeded Leavenworth Orioles, while Mueller Park will feature a game between the third-seeded Granite Falls Kilowatts and the eighth-seeded Stark Longhorns.

The winners of those games will earn the last two coveted spots in this year's Class C state tournament, which will begin August 21 and take place over three weekends in Brownton, Hutchinson, Gaylord and Glencoe.

Springfield and Granite Falls booked a spot in Friday night's 2C elimination state qualifying round by losing their previous games in the double-elimination tournament this past Saturday. Springfield fell to Hanska 15-5 in eight innings in Sleepy Eye, while Granite Falls fell to Courtland 7-6 in 10 innings in New Ulm at Johnson Park.

Meanwhile, Leavenworth and Stark won their way to Friday night out of the elimination bracket with wins this past Sunday in Sleepy Eye. Leavenworth defeated Lamberton 5-3, while Stark shut out Milroy 4-0. Both Leavenworth and Stark dropped their second game in the tournament to fall to elimination play.

The winners of Friday night's games will be scheduled to meet in a Region 2C third-place game at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sleepy Eye. The winner there will received the No. 3 seed from the region at state, while the loser will receive the fourth seed at state from the region.

Leavenworth and Stark are 3-1 in the Region 2C tourney, while Granite Falls and Springfield are 2-1.
