Region 2C roundup: Hanska advances to semifinals, Gibbon walks off Wabasso

SUNDAY

HANSKA 9, STARK 8

NEW ULM -- The top-seeded Hanska Lakers held off the eighth-seeded Stark Longhorns for a 9-8 win in the second round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday.

Aaron Portner got the win for Hanska, striking out six and allowing three runs on six hits in six innings. At the plate, Brady Mosenden was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Jake Finstad was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Chris Knowles added two hits and a run scored, while Colin Anderson and Brock Wellmann each had a hit and a run scored.

Adam Sellner took the loss for Stark, striking out two and allowing nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. At the plate, Merrick Mathiowetz was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Kayden Klein was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Zach Haala added a triple and two RBIs.

Mosenden brought home the first run of the game after being hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the bottom of the first. Hanska added to that lead in the second as Finstad singled to bring home Saywer Olson, then Hanska put together a three-run third inning courtesy of an RBI single by Anderson, a wild pitch to score Mosenden, then another RBI single by Wellmann for a 5-0 lead. Stark scored its first runs in the fifth inning, with Mathiowetz singling for one run, then Haala getting a two-RBI triple to make it a 5-3 game. Hanska came back with a four-run top of the seventh inning, with Mosenden singling in a run, Olson putting an error into play to score two more, then Mosenden scoring again on a wild pitch for a 9-3 game. Two errors scored three runs for Stark in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to 9-6, Then a sacrifice fly by Brandon Helget and an RBI single by Mathiowetz made it a 9-8 game in the eighth. However, the Lakers defense held it together in the ninth inning, not allowing a run to come away with the win.

Hanska advances to play Springfield in the semifinals round on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Sleepy Eye, with the winner clinching a state tournament berth. Stark will play 10th-seeded Sleepy Eye in the elimination bracket Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sleepy Eye.

GIBBON 6, WABASSO 5

NEW ULM - Ninth-seeded Gibbon Walked off 16th-seeded Wabasso 6-5 in a Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament elimination game on Sunday.

Gibbon’s James Panning drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, then advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. A Balk brought him to third, and finally he scored on a passed ball to get the win.

Nolan Huiras got the win for Gibbon, striking out six and allowing three runs, two earend, on six hits in four innings. Domonic Rose made the start, striking out four and allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in five innings. At the plate, Rose had a hit and an RBI, while Brenan Kienlen and Kaden Rieke each had a hit and a run scored.

Maxim Dillon took the loss for Wabasso, allowing two runs on one hit in one inning. CJ Thies made the start, striking out four an allowing one unearned run on three hits in six innings. At the plate, Joshua Guetter was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, while Deagen Maurice and Noah Anderson each had two hits and a run scored. Colton Taylor added a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

Gibbon plays seventh-seeded Leavenworth Saturday at 7 p.m. in New Ulm.

COURTLAND 5, LEAVENWORTH 0

SLEEPY EYE - The second-seeded Courtland Cubs topped the seventh-seeded Leavenworth Orioles in the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday.

Ansen Dulas got the win for Courtland, striking out two and allowing no runs on six hits in seven innings. At the plate, Teddy Giefer was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Cade Bushard was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Carter Lang added a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

Mark Anderson took the loss for Leavenworth, striking out four and allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits in six innings. At the plate, Austin Uecker and Jackson Huiras both had two hits.

Courtland faces third-seeded Granite Falls Saturday at 1 p.m. in New Ulm, with the winner clinching a spot in the state tournament. Leavenworth faces ninth-seeded Gibbon Saturday at 7 p.m. in New Ulm in the elimination bracket.

ST. JAMES 6, SACRED HEART 5

SLEEPY EYE - The 12th-seeded St. James Athletics eliminated the 13th-seeded Sacred Heart Saints with a 6-5 win in the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament elimination bracket on Sunday.

David Bradley earned the win for St. James, striking out one and allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in seven innings of work. At the plate, Bransen Petersen was 2 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored, while Connor Jones and Jared Brey each had two hits.

Petersen had his home run in the third inning, plating two runs to put the A’s up 5-3.

St. James faces sixth-seeded Lamberton on Saturday at 7 p.m. in New Ulm.

SLEEPY EYE 9, FAIRFAX 1

SLEEPY EYE - The 10th-seeded Sleepy Eye Indians downed the 15th-seeded Fairfax Cardinals 9-1 in the elimination bracket of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday.

Nick Mielke got the win for the Indians, striking out seven and allowing one run on six hits in a complete game. At the plate, Mielke was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Cody Schutlz and Jacob Fulmer each had a hit and two RBIs.

Tom Lokensgard took the loss for Fairfax, striking out four and allowing seven runs, four earned, on six hits in five innings. At the plate, Luke Bastian was 3 for 4 with a run scored.

Sleepy Eye plays eighth-seeded Stark Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sleepy Eye.

GRANITE FALLS 4, LAMBERTON 3

SLEEPY EYE - The third-seeded Granite Falls Kilowatts edged by the sixth-seeded Lamberton Long Sox 4-3 in the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday.

Lamberton plays 12th-seeded St. James in the elimination bracket Saturday at 7 p.m. in New Ulm.

SPRINGFIELD -- The top-seeded Hanska Lakers rolled the 16th-seeded Wabasso Jaxx 11-0 in the opening round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Colin Anderson got the win for the Lakers, striking out four and allowing two hits in six innings. At the plate, Chris Knowles was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Sam Knowles had three hits and two runs scored.

Jack Burns took the loss for Wabasso, striking out one and allowing six runs on nine hits in 1 1/3 innings. Andrew Burns had both hits for the Jaxx.

STARK 10, GIBBON 0 (8 INNINGS)

SPRINGFIELD - The eighth-seeded Stark Longhorns defeated the ninth-seeded Gibbon Reds in eight innings in the opening round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Jon Kopacek was the winning pitcher for Stark, striking out one and allowing no runs on five hits in eight innings. At the plate, Nick Labat was 3 for 5 with two runs scored, and Arian Saenz had three RBIs and a run scored.

Layton Hamre took the loss for Gibbon, striking out one and allowing four runs on five hits in six innings. At the plate, Jacob Kropifko had two hits.

SPRINGFIELD 11, ST. JAMES 1 (7 INNINGS)

SPRINGFIELD - The fifth-seeded Springfield Tigers rolled the 12th-seeded St. James Athletics 11-1 in seven innings in the opening round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Adiel Trevino picked up the win for the Tigers, striking out five and allowing one run on three hits in seven innings. At the plate, Aiden Moriarty was 4 for 4 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Wyatt Haler took the loss for St. James, striking out two and allowing eight runs on seven hits in six innings. At the plate, Brad Moldan had two hits and a run scored.

LEAVENWORTH 12, SLEEPY EYE 2 (7 INNINGS)

SLEEPY EYE - The seventh-seeded Leavenworth rolled 10th-seeded Sleepy Eye 12-2 in seven innings in the opening round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Dylan Hillesheim got the win for the Orioles, striking out seven and allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings. At the plate, Austin Uecker was 2 for 3 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored, while Jevan Richert was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Marcus Martinez took the loss for Sleepy Eye, striking out two and allowing seven runs on 10 hits in four innings. At the plate, Matt Sellner was 2 for 3.

LAMBERTON 8, SEARLES 3

SLEEPY EYE - Sixth-seeded Lamberton topped 11th-seeded Searles 8-3 in the first round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Quintyn Vold got the win for Lamberton, striking out nine and allowing three runs on three hits in seven innings. At the plate, Neil Eichten was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, while Kyle Kryzmarzick had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

Kolton Achman took the loss for Searles, striking out one and allowing five runs on seven hits in five innings. At the plate, Graham Glaser had a hit and an RBI.

COURTLAND 17, FAIRFAX 3 (7 INNINGS)

SLEEPY EYE - The second-seeded Courtland Cubs rolled the 15th-seeded Fairfax Cardinals 17-3 in seven innings in the opening round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Teddy Giefer got the win for Courtland, striking out five and allowing three runs on five hits in four innings. At the plate, Jackson Bode and Evan Wiltscheck each had three hits and an RBI, while Jaden Drill was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs and Carter Lang had a home run with two RBIs.

Koufax Rose took the loss for Fairfax, allowing seven runs on six hits in two innings. At the plate, Andrew Peterson and Carter Peterson both had two hits.

GRANITE FALLS 14, ESSIG 5

SLEEPY EYE - The third-seeded Granite Falls Kilowatts downed the 14th-seeded Essig Bluejays 14-5 in the opening round of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday.
