HASTINGS -- The New Ulm Brewers opened play in the Section 1A Amateur Baseball Tournament this past Saturday by falling to the Hastings Hawks 4-1.
The Brewers fell to the elimination bracket with the loss and will travel to take on Dundas in a win-or-go-home game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Brewers took the first lead in the first inning with a sac fly from Sam Keckeisen that scored Colten Schaefer, who led off with a walk. JT Hoffmann and Cole Ranweiler also singled after that walk to load the bases for Keckeisen. After the sac fly, however, Hastings turned a double play to end the Brewers' threat.
A wild pitch and an error in the bottom of the first allowed Hastings to go in front 2-1. Hastings got its final two runs in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Johnny Teigland and an RBI single from Dylan Larson.
Tate Becker took the loss for the Brewers in seven innings of work, allowing four hits and four walks for four runs, one earned, while striking out seven. Blaine Olson pitched an inning in relief for the Brewers, allowing one hit and no walks.
Ranweiler was 2 for 4 to lead the Brewers, who were held to four hits in the game by Hastings starter Kane Sheahan. Sheahan allowed those four hits and five walks for one run in eight innings to earn the win while striking out five. Cade Kimmes pitched the ninth and allowed no hits or runs.
