Dramatic win sends Sleepy Eye to consolation finals

GLENWOOD – Down one run in the bottom of the seventh inning Sleepy Eye was looking to avoid ending its season in a DII Senior Legion Baseball Tournament consolation bracket game against Glenwood-Lowry.
After Carson Uecker drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch to lead off the inning, Merrick Mathiowetz was able to bring him home with a single to tie the game at 6.
But Post 7 didn't stop there.
With Merrick Mathiowetz on second, Landry Folkens put a bunt into play, and an errant throw to home allowed Merrick Mathiowetz to score the walk-off run and win the game.
While the win did send Sleepy Eye to the consolation finals, Post 7 ultimately fell 3-1 in that game to Rushford later in the day.
Karter Haala got the win for Sleepy Eye,in the game against Glenwood-Lowry, allowing no runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Kayden Klein made the start, striking out four and allowing six runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. At the plate, Tyler Mathiowetz was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Uecker and Merrick Mathiowetz each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Klein had a hit and an RBI.
Glenwood-Lowry scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning on four hits, but Sleepy Eye tied the game in the bottom of the inning, with a groundout put into play by Uecker scoring Tyler Mathiowetz, then Klein earning an RBI single. Glenwood-Lowry took the lead again in the second with a run, but again Sleepy Eye tied it later in the inning, with Tyler Mathiowetz putting an error into play to score Haala. The offense paused in the third inning, with no runs scored for either team, and Sleepy Eye took its first lead of the game in the fourth, with Tyler Mathiowetz doubling for an RBI and a 4-3 advantage. Uecker drew a walk with bases loaded later in the inning for a 5-3 lead, but Glenwood-Lowry cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth, then retook the lead with a two-run sixth on four hits. Sleepy Eye held off any more runs in the seventh, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Folkens took the loss in the second game, striking out six and allowing three runs on seven hits in a complete game. At the plate, Tyler Mathiowetz was 2 for 3 with a run scored, while Uecker had a hit and an RBI.
Rushford scored two of its runs in the first inning on two hits, a walk and a balk. Sleepy Eye responded with a run in the bottom of the first, with Uecker doubling to bring home Tyler Mathiowetz. No more runs were scored until Rushford made it 3-1 in the fifth to set the final score.
Sleepy Eye ends its season with a 17-5 record.
