ALEXANDRIA -- New Ulm Junior Legion stayed within striking distance for five innings of a DI Junior Legion State Baseball Tournament game against Alexandria Black, but a seven-run sixth inning by Alexandria ultimately put the game out of reach as New Ulm fell 8-0 on Friday.
New Ulm played Eagan in the elimination bracket later in the day. The results of the game were unavailable at the time of the printing of this edition of The Journal.
Owen Castleman took the loss for New Ulm, striking out eight and allowing three runs on four hits in five innings pitched. At the plate, Mitchell Hopp had two hits, while Noah Gode and Ryler Collins each had one hit.
Neither team scored in the first two innings of the game, but Alexandria put up one run after a single, a walk and a sacrifice fly in the third inning. New Ulm's offense continued to struggle, but Alexandria's exploded in the top of the sixth, converting five hits and five walks into seven runs to blow the game open. The Junior Gold had a 1-2-3 inning offensively in the bottom of the sixth, and while they were able to return the favor in the top of the seventh, they were unable to manage a run in the final half-inning, ending the game with a shutout.
