COURTLAND – The Courtland Cubs defeated the Gaylord Islanders of the River Valley West League Friday evening, July 24, by a score of 14-4. The exhibition game was scheduled for seven innings but ended in the bottom of the sixth because of the 10-run rule.
Courtland out-hit Gaylord 19 to 5. Leading the hitting attack for Courtland were the Giefer brothers. Teddy Giefer was 5 for 5, including two home runs and 5 RBI’s. Josh Giefer was 4 for 4 with a double and 3 RBI’s. Also getting multiple hits for the Cubs were Jackson Bode, Nik Johnson, Maddox Mortensen, and Evan Wiltscheck.
Andrew Peters picked up the win for Courtland, pitching three and 2/3 innings, giving up the four runs, striking out three, walking one, and hitting one batter. Teagan Kamm pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, and striking out two.
For Gaylord, Gavyn Hayden had two hits. Hunter Stearns, the Islanders starting pitcher, took the loss. Relief pitchers included Aaron Brinkman and Damon Almich.
Courtland now enters Region 2C playoff action this upcoming weekend. The No. 2-seeded Cubs play 15th-seeded Fairfax on Saturday, August 1, at 1:30 p.m. in Sleepy Eye. Region 2C play will continue in New Ulm and Sleepy Eye on Sunday.
