SLEEPY EYE 13, SEARLES 12
SEARLES -- Ninth-inning rallies were in high demand Sunday during a Tomahawk East League regular season finale between the Sleepy Eye Indians and the Searles Grizzlies.
After taking the lead for the first time all game in the top of the ninth, the Indians had to hold off a Searles rally in the bottom of the ninth to finish the the game with a 13-12 victory.
Sleepy Eye outhit Searles 15-12 in the game.
Tyler Mathiowetz led the Indians at the plate, going 4 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs, while Jon Petermann was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Matt Mielke was 2 for 4 with with two RBIs and two walks. Cody Schultz also was 2 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Indians, while Nick Mielke was 2 for 6 and Luke Mielke was 1 for 4 with a double, two walks and an RBI.
Jake Mielke got the win for the Indians in three innings of relief, giving up two hits and no ealks for two runs while striking out two.
Tony Geiger had a big day at the plate to lead the Grizzlies, going 3 for 4 with three homers, a walk, five RBIs and four runs scored. Isaiah Rieser was 3 for 6 with an RBI also for Searles, while Graham Glaser was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Nathan Vance was 1 for 5 with a double and an RBI.
Grant Bruns took the loss for Searles, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks in 2/3 innings.
Schultz's second RBI double of the day and an RBI single by Petermann tied it at 8-all in the eighth before the Indians sprinted ahead for the first time all day in the ninth with a five-run inning. That five-run ninth saw a bases-loaded walk by Matt Mielke give the Indians a 9-8 lead before Mathiowetz singled in another run. Schultz was hit by pitch with the bases full to bring home another run and give Sleepy Eye an 11-8 lead before Petermann singled in a run and Jack Windschitl scored on a passed ball for a 13-8 lead.
Searles rallied in the bottom of the ninth, with Glaser connecting for an RBI single with one out to have Searles down 13-9. Dan Reinke reached on an error to score another run for Searles and a walk to Landon Barstad put two on. Mathiowetz, pitching in relief, got a strikeout for the second out, but Rieser singled in a run and a bases-loaded walk to Vance had Searles within a run. Mathiowetz buckled down and got another strikeout, however, ending the game.
Searles never trailed until the ninth and took an early 4-0 lead after scoring two runs in both the second and third innings. A two-run homer in the third by Geiger highlighted the early scoring. An RBI single by Matt Mielke and a two-run homer by Mathiowetz in the fourth had Sleepy Eye down just 4-3.
Geiger homered again in the fourth, this time a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, for a 5-3 Searles lead.
A Luke Mielke RBI double in the fifth had Sleepy Eye back within a run, but Searles got that run back in the bottom of the fifth on an error to lead 6-4. Cody Schultz had an RBI double and Petermann had a sac fly to tie the game in the sixth inning, but Geiger hit his third homer of the day, a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the sixth, to give Searles an 8-6 lead.
Region 2C playoffs begin for both teams Saturday. Sleepy Eye is the 10th seed in the tournament and will take on seventh-seeded Leavenworth at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sleepy Eye, while Searles is the 11th seed and will play No. 6-seeded Lamberton at 7 p.m. Saturday night in Sleepy Eye.
HANSKA 14, STARK 4 (8 INNINGS)
HANSKA -- The Hanska Lakers defeated the Stark Longhorns 14-4 in eight innings in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Sunday.
Aaron Portner earned the win for Hanska, striking out four and allowing three runs on five hits in 5 innings. At the plate, Chris Knowles was 3 for 4 with two home runs, while Jake Finstad was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Sawyer Olson was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Miah Garza took the loss for Stark, striking out one and allowing five runs on two hits in two innings. At the plate, Talan Helget was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Zach Haala was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Hanska finishes the regular season with a 14-2 record, while Stark finishes 5-11. Hanska opens the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday night as the No. 1 seed against No. 16-seeded Wabasso in New Ulm, while No. 8-seeded Stark takes on No. 9-seeded Gibbon at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Springfield.
NEW ULM 5, ESSIG 0
NEW ULM -- The New Ulm Brewers downed the Essig Bluejays 5-0 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Sunday.
Adam Slander earned the win for New Ulm, striking out three and allowing no runs on two hits in six innings. At the plate, Cole Ranweiler was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, while Ayden Jensen, Sam Keckeisen, Tate Becker and Jason Seidl each had a hit and an RBI.
Winsten Nienhaus took the loss for Essig, striking out four and allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings. At the plate, Zach Riederer and Henry Forst each had a hit.
New Ulm finishes the regular season atop the TEL standings with a 15-1 record and will face an opponent to be determined on Saturday in the Section 1A tournament. Essig finishes the regular season with a 3-13 record and will play third-seeded Granite Falls as the 14th seed Saturday at 4:30 at Sleepy Eye Ballpark in the Region 2C tournament.
