Springfield makes junior legion sub-state finals
RUTHTON — The Springfield Junior Legion Post 257 baseball team won twice in the elimination bracket Sunday to advance to Monday’s DII Junior Legion Southwest Sub-State Tournament finals.
After defeating Slayton 8-2, Springfield capped off Sunday with a 5-1 win over Lake Crystal to earn a finals appearance against Sleepy Eye on Monday evening back in Ruthton.
In the win over Slayton, Springfield got a gem on the mound from Max Moriarty, who struck out 12 while allowing just one hit and two walks for two runs for the complete-game win. He also was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, while Thomas Beers was 2 for 2 with a double and three runs scored. Camden Guhlke also was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Springfield, while Blake Wilhelmi was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
In the elimination finals win over Lake Crystal, Springfield Wyatt Mueller got the complete-game win, allowing five hits and no walks for one earned run while striking out nine. Madden Lendt led the way at the plate for Springfield, going 3 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Ely Streich was 2 for 4 with a double, Wilhelmi was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Moriarty was 1 for 1 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
