Area roundup: Springfield, Sleepy Eye win sub-state quarterfinals games

SPRINGFIELD 6, LUVERNE 5

ST. JAMES — The Springfield Legion Post 257 baseball team held off Luverne 6-5 on Friday evening in a Senior Legion DII Southwest Sub-State Baseball Tournament quarterfinals game.

Springfield took a 6-2 lead after two innings but Luverne got two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to stay on Springfield’s heels. Starting pitcher Eli Hegund and Post 257 was able to hold on, however, for the win.

Heglund earned the complete-game win, allowing six hits and two walks for five runs, four earned, while striking out two.

Ely Streich was 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead Springfield, while Max Moriarty was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Thomas Beers was 1 for 2. Adiel Trevino also was 1 for 4 with two RBIs, while Aiden Moriarty was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Springfield moved on to Saturday’s semifinals game against Sleepy Eye with the win, which will begin at 5 p.m. back in St. James.

SLEEPY EYE 13, ST. JAMES 3 (6 INNINGS)

ST. JAMES — The Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 team scored 13 unanswered runs to down St. James 13-3 on Friday night in a Senior Legion DII Southwest Sub-State Baseball Tournament quarterfinals game.

St. James took a 3-0 lead after scoring one in the first and two in the second, but Sleepy Eye was quick to catch fire for four runs in the bottom of the second. Post 7 added another run in the fourth, six more in the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early due to the 10-run lead rule.

Jack Windschitl’s RBI single to left scored Eric Lozano for the 13th run, ending the game in six innings.

Tyler Mathiowetz went 2 for 2 with a walk and an RBI to lead Sleepy Eye as the leadoff hitter, while Adam Braulick was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Merrick Mathiowetz was 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. Kayden Klein also was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Sleepy Eye.

Merrick Mathiowetz got the pitching win in six innings, allowing six hits and two walks for three unearned runs while striking out three.

Sleepy Eye will play Springfield at 5 p.m. Saturday in the tournament’s semifinals back in St. James.
