Silver hold off top-seeded Marshall in semifinals
MANKATO — The fourth-seeded New Ulm VFW Silver held off a late rally by the top-seeded Marshall VFW Orange on Friday night, winning 7-3 in the VFW District 2 Baseball Tournament semifinals at Wolverton Field.
Hudson Lieser pitched the first six innings for the Silver and allowed four hits and three walks for three unearned runs while striking out four. He threw 92 pitches to secure the win.
Chase Wilson took the mound in the bottom of the seventh for New Ulm, but Marshall got to him with a leadoff double. A hit by pitch then put two on. Wilson forced a popout but hit another batter to load the bases, prompting the Silver to bring Bobby Rewitzer back to the mound to try to save the game.
Rewitzer, who already had a walk-off single against the Mankato National earlier in the day and got the win in that game, took over in relief against Marshall and struck out the first two batters he faced to send the Silver on to the finals at 5 p.m. Saturday at Wolverton Field.
Wyatt Hansen led the Silver at the plate, going 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Blake Johnson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Ethan Drill was 2 for 5.
The Silver will play New Prague in a 5 p.m. finals game Saturday and will need to win that game to force a second, deciding finals game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. New Prague, the No. 2 seed who is undefeated in the district tourney, needs just one win to advance to the state tournament, while New Ulm needs two.
