NEW ULM — The New Ulm VFW Silver baseball team put the ball in play more often than not on Monday at Johnson Park, but the New Prague VFW Trojans always seemed to find it and make a play.

The Trojans also got hot with their bats, using a a nine-run fifth inning to run away with a 12-1 win in a VFW baseball game. The game ended in five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

The Trojans outhit the Silver 10-1 and despite committing three errors to New Ulm’s one, the hits were more than enough to offset the miscues.

The Silver, who are now 9-7 this summer, got a good start from pitcher Bobby Rewitzer on Monday as the righty allowed four hits and four walks for three runs, two earned, while striking out three in four innings.

Rewitzer took the loss, while Owen Drill pitched a tough fifth inning that New Prague collected six hits off him for nine runs.

“All of our pitchers have been fantastic, Bobby’s no exception to that,” Silver head coach Josh Altmann said. “He definitely knows how to throw the ball, and I can say the same about Owen Drill. Owen Drill, we’ve been in that situation, and we’ve just got to move on from it.”

New Ulm couldn’t keep up with New Prague at the plate, however, something Altmann said is just something that happens. Regardless, Altmann was hoping to see better at-bats from his players Monday.

“I don’t think there’s any tricks, everything in baseball is a choice,” Altmann said. “Whether it’s hot, cold, windy, rainy, we’ve got to choose to put the ball in play, and that’s what we’re looking for right now.”

The Silver’s lone hit of the game came off the bat of catcher Hudson Lieser on a leadoff single in the third inning. He went 1 for 2.

Blake Aufderheide drew a walk for New Ulm’s only other runner to reach in the game not on an error. Blake Johnson, Owen Drill and Lieser reached base on New Prague’s three errors.

Nick Pruismann got the start and win for New Prague in three innings, allowing one hit and no walks for no runs while striking out three.

Braeden Rens went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead New Prague, while Jace Juncker was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Trojans got on the board in the second inning on an RBI single from Rens to score Brandt Tisdel, who walked earlier with one out and was singled to second by Juncker. An RBI single by Rens and an error scored two runs for the Trojans in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

Drill took the mound in the fifth for New Ulm and forced a flyout to start the inning, but walks to Cal Kalina and Tisdel followed, leading to an RBI single by Juncker and 4-0 Trojans lead. An RBI double by Rens and an RBI single by Grant Bastyr made it 6-0 before a Pruismann triple scored two for an 8-0 lead.

A suicide squeeze bunt by Easton Weinandt made it a 9-0 game and had two outs in the inning before Drew Ykema walked, Wyatt Miller singled and Kalina tripled to make it 11-0. A passed ball scored Kalina for a 12-0 lead.

New Ulm got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after Aufderheide walked and stole second. That was followed with an error that allowed Lieser to reach and Aufderheide to take third. Lieser stole second before a wild pitch brought Aufderheide home.

“We played [New Prague] earlier in the season and they definitely were capable,” Altmann said. “They definitely showed up today and they’re not shy at the plate. Would love to see that from our guys, too. But I can’t get down on our guys. I’ve coached them since seventh grade. I know what they’ve got in them, it’s just showing up and be ready, which is something that’s hard to teach.”

The Silver next play at 6 p.m. Wednesday in St. James.

Starting at $4.65/week.
