NEW ULM — With bases loaded in the seventh inning in a Upper Midwest Classic legion baseball game between the New Ulm Gold and Springfield on Friday, Nebraska, New Ulm pitcher Colin Forstner got a strikeout swinging for the final out of the game, giving the Gold a 6-5 win at Johnson Park.

With the win, New Ulm improves to 2-0 in the tournament and will face Rosetown Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Johnson Park for the final pool play game.

Eli Anderson earned the win for New Ulm, striking out two and allowing one hit and no runs in 1 2/3 innings. Mitchell Hopp made the start, striking out four and allowing five runs, one earned, in 4 1/3 innings, while Forstner got the save, striking out two and allowing one hit and no runs in one inning. At the plate, Candon Briggs was 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs, while Dirk Haynes had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

Springfield got the first two runs of the game in the first inning with the help of two hits and an error. After a scoreless second inning, Briggs tied the game with a two-RBI double, scoring Hubbard and Portner in the third inning. Springfield took the lead back in the fifth, bringing home three runs on two hits, two walks and an error, but Briggs’s triple in the bottom of the inning scored two runs again to cut the lead to 5-4. In the bottom of the sixth, Anderson put down a squeeze bunt that scored Kyle Albrecht before a single by Haynes brought home Levi Hopp for New Ulm’s first lead of the game, 6-5.

Springfield doubled to lead off the seventh inning, then drew a walk and a hit-by-pitch to lead the bases. However, Forstner coaxed a groundout and struck out the final batter to seal the victory.
